Anyone seriously into fly fishing

Closing day at Sugar Mountain was today so that means that ski season up in NC is officially over and it's time to start fly fishing. Anyone else into fly fishing? If so do y'all wade or do you have a drift boat? My dad guides and he has a drift boat but most of the time I just wade at my local park or in the Linville Gorge. But what are some of y'alls favorite places to fish?

I have a pair of cabelas with some redhead boots and there fine and pretty inexpensive.

I love fly fishing. Been fishing every month straight for 15 months now.
I wade, but lots of friends have drift boats or rafts that I get to come along on.
Living in Montana means I have the Gallatin, Madison, Ruby and more right near me which is pretty cool.

Yes. I usually use my duck hunting waders since they’re neoprene and much warmer. You just gotta layer well. There are some days that aren’t that bad, once you’re used to it being 10 or below everyday the water almost feels warm.

We’re heading into runoff season so it’s about to fell pretty cold and high again for a month or so.

that was a ton of fun ngl just a bit cold. i couldn’t tell when i was getting bites so i didn’t know when to set the hook but my homie who was teaching me caught 2

Takes a little bit to feel out when you get a bite— nothing wrong with using an indicator though.

You can definitely get into on a budget, Cabela's has some affordable intro sets, but IDK if they're in Canada.

My partner's dad is a fly fishing guide and I made this mistake this week of telling him I have a Tenkara rod and that my attention span is too short for how boring fishing is. Never actually put in the effort to learn where to go and when to actually try to catch something though.

Got a pair at Dicks from Field and Stream for 99 bucks and they work perfect, can most definitely recommend

No, 5 is where everyone should start especially for trout fishing. Sage also makes a fantastic rod. If you don’t have a reel/line yet snag a 5 weight floater (the Rio Mainstream Trout is really nice, it’s slightly heavier for easier road loading and only costs $39.99 compared to other trout lines that’ll start at around $89.99). Reels for trout are ta as big of a deal as they are when you’re fishing saltwater, they’re more or less just there for line storage (except out West, where their trout are fat and can actually run you in to your backing). Cheeky Fishing based in Boston makes some really nice stuff for relatively cheap:

I actually have this reel on my 5 weight. It comes preloaded with backing, line and leader. The line actually casts super nice the reel is lightweight and the drag is more than adequate. These are a great deal if you’re not looking to spend a ton of money, but they’re also significantly higher quality than a $30 Cortland combo you’d get at your local Walmart (I’ve had more than a few of them and they’re absolutely dogshit).

I got extra spools for the sage reels somewhere , the phlueger reel is a hand me down

Going on a fishing trip with a friend in July to the Livingstone by Longview AB, one of the most beautiful spots I've seen in Canada. I suck ass at fishing though, I need to practice a lot before then.
