Skis/brands with most resilient base?

I’m not sure if there a big difference from company to company, but this year I got a pair of skis with sintered bases and they seem to be holding up way better than the pair I had with extruded bases.

ON3P has the thickest bases in the game currently, they have 1.8mm thick bases custom made

For sure. I have noticed difference in durability between different brands sintered bases though. Maybe higher density?

We proudly count ourselves as one of a few brands who use 1.8mm sintered bases (ptex 3000) as standard. With that comes 2x2.4mm thick edges to match. Whether it’s in the park or off the groomers, core shots and blown edges suck and kill skis. The more durable a ski, the more sustainable a ski. Budget skis with thin base & edges are a false economy.

Good to know! IMO selling skis with thin bases is like what apple does with their phones, makes you buy a new pair sooner rather than later

Really enjoy the durability/sustainability initiative that you and Scott especially are taking

I have a pair of Jeronimos from like 2015 that I still ride to this day and the bases are pretty much in mint condition besides a few marks from rails, but nothing some wax doesn't instantly fix.

I’m still amazed at every rock I hit skiing mountain bike trails and hardly making a dent in the bases of my ON3Ps. Pretty sure moments bases are right up there in durability too.

smellyfartsmellyI ski out East and it’s been a rough winter. Got brand new liberty origins and I’m dismayed at how thin and soft the bases are compared to my ancient line prophet 98s. I was thinking ON3P. Any suggestions?

My J Skis hit a decently sized rock at the end of the season and the bases are barely even damaged just a little scratched. I would either get those or ON3Ps

My 16/17 Black Crows Atris had surprisingly strong bases. After ~50 days of use and countless times of skiing over rocks and thinking “oh shit that one felt bad”, the bases have held up strong. Especially being that light for a 108 waisted ski.

My slants are pretty good. Durasurf 4001 bases

Still yet to put a scratch into my K2s a season later

Volkls are pretty tough, same with on3p. Unfortunately all skis break. Tools not jewels

I hit a lurking volcanic shark at speed off of Magic Mile earlier this season. Double eject tomahawk action. Small scratch in my Billygoat bases. I was sure that would be a core shot. I had a similar instance 10 years ago on Atomic Blog's. Straight core shot that required a base weld.

I ski a lot of rocks. When I see sharks I go hunting and smash those chunky bois with reckless abandon.

My ON3Ps hold up so well to frequent rock scrapes, and even some hard landings with direct impact to sharp rocks can come out unscathed, and the frequency of an actual core shot is pretty rare. I don't baby my skis by any means and I have probably 100 total days between 3 pairs of ON3Ps, one pair of which I got used from someone who was an equally reckless shark hunter. Between all 3 pairs I have incurred 2 large-ish full depth core shots from landing directly on a sharp rock at high speed, and 3 smaller gouges that did not penetrate to the core, they all have their fair share of long scratches from skiing across rocks but not deep enough to warrant filling/welding. Overall the bases (and edges) have proven themselves to be extremely durable.

I had a pair of Liberty skis from like 2012 that had apparently quite thin and soft sintered bases. During an early season day at Big Sky I managed to do so much damage that I needed to do a 2" x 6" base patch and fill several other deep core shots. My friends with newer Liberty skis seem to fare much better in durability, I've seen a pair of Origins take some decent abuse and come out unscathed or needing only minor repairs.

My Surface One Lifes are my "dedicated" rock ski that have taken the most abuse and have dozens of full depth core shots, but they are from 2013 when Surface was still using mostly extruded bases. The extruded bases are nowhere near as hard and durable as ON3P's sintered bases but are by far the easiest to repair, and of the countless gouges the bases have taken a tear-out of the repair is rare and I have not experienced any peeling propagation of a gouge like I experienced with my old Liberty skis in which an a gouge causes delamination of the base and core material/graphic layer. I use a welding iron and a base weld gun, I do not use drip ptex candles for any repairs.
