EV/Tesla Smug

So I’ve been in the market for an electric SUV, test drove some Teslas and today tested the VW ID4. So I’ve been doing a bit of research.

but OMG I can’t stand the EV owner mentality, they make me want to tap myself in the head with a .40S&W for even considering joining that “lifestyle”. The old South Park “Smug” episode about when everyone in South Park gets a Prius/hybrid—so spot on.

I get it—there’s been coal rolling bros and douchy muscle car owners (todays flame/poppop tunes don’t help the ICE car scene’s popularity) but these people have that same mentality everyone thinks cops have “you must have been bullied in HS so you became a cop” now that’s why people buy P90/P100Ds whatever.

As a geologist, I can’t stand this “future mindset”. “Lithium mining isn’t destructive to the environment, they strip mine it from salt deposits”. Yea, there are areas you can get lithium easily, but there’s places you can take a damn 711 slurpee straw and suck oil out from the ground from a conventional reservoir.

as lithium and whatever battery biproduct demand rises, they will get to very filthy methods easily as if not more destructive than what people think fracking is.

and FFS, if you want a 3 second 0-60 Tesla, the increased battery size and product demand is the same thing as choosing to buy a Hellcat instead of a Dart, you’re no environmentalist

I agree with everything you say. They really are decieving with what is eco friendly about the cars. However there are a few things that make them better over the lifespan of the car.

1) Regenerative braking saves a lot of brake wear. This is important because the microscopic dust emitted by brakes is pretty bad and when there is less of that, it's good.
2) The lack of oil and gas (and coolant? Not sure if they use coolant or not) that can potentially leak randomly and get into the ecosystem is beneficial. There is a lot more control over where the toxic substances go which is pretty crucial.
3) if these cars prove to have longevity compared to their ICE counterparts, the total amount of material used to sustain that lifespan is going to be a lot less.

All that said, I also hate the whole electric car smugness that you can find in most car subcultures. It's all the same stripes, different colors. Just drive your car and enjoy it, ya don't have to belittle others for enjoying a different kind of car (not you OP, the smug people)

All reasons I want one. i don’t wanna have to do maintenance on wifes car (but will be cool to learn on if possible-manufacturers making 3rd party repair nearly impossible these days)

My family gave me shit for buying a BMW (they’re avid Toyota/Honda reliable/econo car enthusiasts). Wonder how they really feel after having to pay $4k to replace the CVT trans on their econo car...

i’m also conflicted—kinds want to support Nissan thru these trying times and get the Ariya, reward them for making the 400Z. Or would that backfire when they say “geez, our EV outsold the 400Z 40:1, time to drop it”. Then again, look at how many years sold an unchanged 370Z. Maybe the 400Z will be one of the last ICE on dealer lots if Nissan lasts so long

Hey man I'm also a Toyota fanboy. But fuck CVTs and boring cars, standard all the way. If I can, I'll never buy a non-manual ICE car. One day I'll hopefully own a PDK Porsche though... One day.

I also want to congratulate Nissan on the 400z, in fact my dream project car is a Datsun 280z with an RB26/AWD system dropped in. But Nissan is consistently like a whole generation behind the curve. Not sure if I would buy a new car from them.

The new VW Id.Buzz looks cool. 4wd, 369hp, space for a kitchen. Toyota has dumped an absurd amount of money into solid cell batteries which should be lighter, last longer and not be as bad for the environment. I'd like to see a relatively light electric wrx competitor.

I'm still never gonna sell my gas guzzling land cruiser.

Smug EV license plates might be up there with fake badging as the stupidest car mods. "LOL GAS" wow so funny and original. You must be a comedian. Tell me again how your $40k sedan is faster 0-60 than a Ferrari.

Extreme Tesla fanboys are the newest category of annoying car culture.

I like Teslas too. They're amazing cars. I just wouldn't get one because I don't want to be associated with that crowd. I'm glad companies are finally catching up to Tesla in EV specs and features at a competitive price point (see Mustang Mach-E)

I have a family friend who will not stop bitching about a recent experience where she had to drive without heat/lights/radio/etc in the cold because she drove balls deep up i25 into wyoming and it's somehow their fault that they didn't have charging stations along her route. Teslas are great but jesus christ sometimes you cannot convince their owners that they aren't perfect.

Gf is under the impression that teslas can do no wrong and wants to buy one, despite the fact that one of her main use cases would be driving 700km from home to university and vice versa. I think they genuinely make fantastic cars, and itll be interesting to see when anyone can touch them in the electric game, but they still definitely have their weaknesses.
