izzyhennI have the craziest story for you guys. On Wednesday I had the gnarliest slam of my entire life- I overshot this jump taking it to flat, with my head and neck taking the majority of the impact. I’ve hit the jump many times before but not on that day yet, real proper step up so I was worried about knuckling, and I miscalculated the speed- it was 47 and sunny but deceivingly fast, and my skis hadn’t been waxed since nov. I never lost consciousness, so after the crash I literally got right back up, clipped back in and skied down. I knew something was seriously wrong so I never ever tried moving it: kept my head and neck completely still. My homie drove me to the hospital while I stabilized my own head between my hands. Checked myself into the ER, they didn’t even think I needed an X-ray bc I was so stable & responsive. Turns out I have a concussion and I broke 3 vertebrae in my neck- my c2 c4 and c5. Every single doctor that I’ve spoken to is stunned that I’m not paralyzed or worse, esp since my c2 fracture is my worst one. I have zero other injuries, and I have zero nerve damage. My helmet also has zero damage to it. Fattest shoutout to giro ledge mips, that shit without a doubt saved my life. Also shoutout to all the healthcare workers out there, when I heard the news I was alone bc no visitors allowed, and my phone was dead so I couldn’t contact anyone. Those nurses held my hand through it all. Gonna sound crazy but right now I’m the happiest I’ve ever been in my life. Fucking stoked on life!!!! Still a lot of unknowns but imma be alright! Feels like I got a second chance. Blessings to everyone out there!!!!! Life is fucking beautiful go enjoy that sunshine!!!

theabortionatorYeah all are good. Had a lower spine one a couple months ago. Always scary af but good to know.

Honestly the recent one was scary af. He had broken his tailbone and said he rebroke it, couldn't sit, so we helped him up. And he was struggling. Ended up being able to.to keep him mobilized, get him on a pad and sled him down to the car and get him to the hospital. Friends did a good job with him. Scared me because you just don't know. We didn't do anything crazy and I feel were pretty careful in a non patrol option situation. But yeah. Was scary finding out that he was fucked up. Luckily we reqlized more than tailbone, but damn, idk.

It's hard because people have a lot of recurring injuries. If someone dislocated their shoulder a few times and said they did it that's what you go with.

But yeah just be careful people. Sometimes you just don't know how fucked up yo are.

I cracked a vertebrae and cracked my femur all the way down and I guess tried to get away from patrol..made it like 2 steps of getting up and collapsed but sometimes you don't know, you wanna keep it cool, adrenaline is flowing.

Always be cautious with back and neck injuries.

Shitty thing about that is our healthcare system. It's easy to risk it and I prolly would to save the bill. We need to fix that. But thats another rant another day.

Glad you arent fucked. Heal up strong, do your PT. Don't rush it. Skiing will be there when you're ready!

Young_pattyIt’s always the little things you never expect, a Jump you’re chill with or a rail you’ve been hitting all year can really catch you off guard when you’re too comfortable. Glad you’re ok OP, hope you get back up there and stomp whatever you were trying soon

BucketheadStoked for you man that could've been real bad! Same with me the other day. The nurses were with me before surgery and very affectionate. I can imagine some people don't get the same treatment.

katrinaI highly recommend disenchantment on netflix if you need something mindless and funny to watch. I'm also watching this Nick Cage movie right now called Jujitsu which is terrible in all the right ways - think ninjas meet predator but also armies and plutonium.

donotreplyfirst of all love your mindset second idk you but i wish you prompt recovery, i’m glad you will be able to get back to skiing . i wanna put my perspective into this because i admire your reaction I had a pretty serious head injury where for i lost ability to speak eat talk and walk and so on which almost took my life away. so huge yes to mips helmets this is my first season back to it and im still waiting for acl surgery i took a bad slam last week and this week my skiing felt too unstable and sketchy. decided to put my season to an end and wait until my health is all steady. it’s does suck but i know it’ll be worth it. I’m also glad to hear that you had the proper reaction to make sure you don’t worsen your injury . trust me when you’ll be back you’ll have a strong mindset and im sure it’ll show in your skiing. having health is something we should never take for granted and we’re lucky to have! honestly all the best to you

MalcolmstoddartWhat a story, I'm so glad you're alright. And what an attitude you have about this too, holy shit; this mindset is what really resonates with me. Life has some unbelievably close-calls, and some pretty terrifying moments, but through all that there are moments such as these where you realize how lucky you are to not have it worse. I don't want to drag this on too long, but it reminds me of a short proverb my dad used to tell me: it could always be worse, there is a lot to grateful for in life, even in the worst of situations. It is a saying that has always resonated with me, and hearing the way you have handled that terrifying situation was quite inspirational. Hope you heal up fast!! Life really is a blessing, I'm glad you're going to be alright.

izzyhennThank you so much for asking! I'm feeling happier than ever, but physically at night the pain is excruciating. Gonna try some melatonin tonight and hopefully I'll finally get a good nights sleep. Mornings are my favorite tho bc its a reminder I'm still here!

MalcolmstoddartYou could perhaps try CBD for the pain. Whenever I am in a lot of pain now that's what I take (can be taken additionally to other pain meds as well), and I swear by it!

EngulfCannelWow. This is nuts. So glad you are ok and had the smarts to keep your neck stable! I broke my neck last year, c6 completely in half. Also broke my back and pelvis along with it. But the neck is the especially scary one because it could result in paralysis or death. You have a great attitude! I felt the same way after my accident, just such an intense gratitude for life. You feel differently about life when you almost lose it and come out ok. That feeling of pure gratitude is really special. It feels like you'll feel that way forever, but it does start to fade a bit. You'll have your ups and downs through the recovery and your hard days, but stay strong through it! Life is a blessing, and you never know when things are going to change. Life can change in an instant. So glad you came out ok, and stay strong! you got this recovery!!

CatBoyThis needs to act as a PSA when it comes to spring park skiing. Many friends and acquaintances have hurt themselves (one paralyzed) overshooting/undershooting big park jumps because of the freeze/thaw cycle throughout the day that drastically changes the speed of the in-run. Glad you are doing well considering..

TheDriftingDadGlad to hear you are doing good! I suffered a crazy mountain bike accident in 2019. Lost conciousness, broke my helmet, and shattered my cheek bone. I don't remember the 16 hrs after the crash, and was basically bedridden for a month.

Keep the positive vibes! The biggest thing I still am dealing with is mental issues. My personality completely changed after the accident, and I am now taking medication that has really helped. It sounds like you didn't have as much head trauma as I did, but definitely do not be afraid to go to a therapist or psychiatrist if you feel off at all.

TheDriftingDadThank you, it has been a rough road. I had to get surgery and have a bunch of plastic and screws put on my face to repair my cheekbone and eye socket. I am stoked to hear you do not need surgery. Definitely listen to what the doctor says.
