Cheap housing in Mammoth

I'm trying to find a relatively affordable place to live in Mammoth for about a month after I graduate from college in May. Was looking on airbnb and prices for a month long stay exceed my budget by a good bit.

I will have a car so I am open to driving a little bit to get to the mountain. Any recommendations on where to stay that wouldn't break the bank would be greatly appreciated.

Go to summit county co.

I feel like mammoth is too close to the warm upper limit of good snow climate. Its like almost as far south as los angeles and it isnt even that high altitude.

ive been skiing 2 feet of pow in may in summit county and it literally felt like there were 2 months of winter remaining.

I guess mammoth is always gonna be popular bc of LA proximity and the housing is cheap because mammoth built like thousands of houses and condos around the base but if you can choose your destination summit county culture is so fucking based its ridiculous.

and theres plenty of cheap housing in summit county too.

Mammoth has some of the deepest snowpack of any resort dude haha may in mammoth is fantastic and he probably has an ikon pass. Summit county doesnt even have a resort open in may youre actually high.

I guess. Ive only been to mam once and the snow was either crusty ice or slushfest with absolutely nothing in between. Maybe it was a bad weather week. But the jumps were deforming by the hour every day the sun was out

Just stop man, mammoth mountain and mammoth lakes have almost a 1500' elevation difference, the base of mammoth is 9000ft. You can camp down in the valley in may, its still like 40-50 degrees at 9000ft but they have a shit ton of snow... mammoth has been a staple of the ski/snowboard industry since the inception of freeskiing, where have you been?

Thank you for the input, if all else fails I will end up pursing that route. Do you know of any other towns close by that have more affordable options?

I always felt their competitiveness about building one of the best parks of any NA resort was compensating for their hit or miss snow conditions. Just like how shitty midwest or ec hills build huge parks to attract kids. But Like i said maybe i was there on a bad week weather wise, but i could never see myself choosing mammoth as my go to resort unless i lived in LA.

not really man, mammoth is in the middle of nowhere. Id say get a spot for a week or two and go out a week or two before you have the rental and you can at least be inside the 2nd half of the trip. There are tons of places to camp, from the scenic route (sometimes has snow in may) or down by the hwy near the hot springs there areas you can camp as well.

I mean your one trip means literally nothing dude, their park is immaculate every time I go to mammoth and they do a really good job managing it in the spring as well. Your suggestions was summit county? the resorts arent even open in may brother... only a few places in NA actually have park skiing in May.

Sometimes a basin gets multiple feet in july.



pretty sure mammoth hasnt snowed in july since the last ice age.

It wasnt a huge problem but if they werent salting the jumps like crazy it might have been worse.

and isnt mams base 8000’ ?

Worked there 2 winters ago and the mountain has some pretty affordable employee housing options to choose from. Maybe try calling and seeing if because of covid there are less people and they have some empty spots to fill. If you don't want to car camp you can always try to find a place in Bishop (like 35 minutes South) or maybe near June Mountain (like 20 minutes North).
