Mounting your own bindings???

Mounting is easy if you have a jig. If you dont have a jig, mounting is a bitch and if you fuck it up it might cost your a knee. Paper jigs kind of suck too.

There's tons of opinions about this on NS. Never tried it because 1. I dont have the tools and 2. If i am spending the $$$ on new gear, id like to have a professional mount them.

The shop could fuck it up too, but at least if they fuck it up there is some likelyhood of getting it fixed vs being out of luck

I’ve done many mounts using the paper jigs. It’s a little tricky, but not too bad. I wouldn’t make your first attempt on new gear though. Get some shit $10 skis off Craigslist or something to practice on first. Scour the internet and YouTube also. Many,many tutorials out there already.

You’re 100% correct. However proper jigs arent exactly easy to come by. And they’re quite expensive if you can find one.

I've done plenty of paper mounts and they're honestly not that hard, but there are a few key things to note to ensure success.

1. Use a centre punch to create a small divot in the topsheet for each hole. This will prevent your drill bit from wandering.

2. If you don't have a proper ski drill bit, use a 5/32" or a 4mm, and wrap Gorilla tape around it leaving exactly 9mm exposed. This will prevent you from drilling through the ski.

3. Double check that your paper template matches the screws on your bindings, and take a few measurements with a plastic ruler to be sure you've got the scaling right!

4. If you have access to one, use a Pozi #3 screwdriver to install your bindings, not a Phillips #3. It'll fit the screws a lot better and prevent stripping the heads.

In addition to this, before you start you need to make extra sure you have the precise center of your skis from side to side, to line the center line of your jig up with. This step can take the longest time of the whole process.
Sticking some tape on the ski will let you mark it without leaving a line on your topsheet.
