Hey all. Awesome site. I've found a lot of helpful info here over the years, but finally decided to join. I'm an east coaster (MD), originally from Florida. At 37, I've taken tips from this forum for a long time posted by people much younger! Thanks for that.

I used to live in California, and powder, steeps, trees, etc. were my thing out there. Now that my skiing happens well below the timber line here in the east, I'm starting to probe the park a bit. On my big fat Gotamas, I'm not doing anything other than little jumps and boxes--nothing crazy. But it's fun being an old dog trying new tricks. I may break down and get a set of dedicated park skis I can detune for rails. I'll have to ask my knees for permission.

Anyway, glad to be here. I'm raising up a new little newschooler. She's 5 and skiing for her third year. Probably the hardest thing I've ever done on snow was letting go of her harness and letting her do turns on her own down the hill. She loves it though. I think skiing could be our thing for a long time to come. Maybe we'll build a little summer setup this year in the back yard.

Not really that old yet, but how are the gotamas in the park? My first touring set up is a pair of gotamas mounted with marker barons and fucked up by shitty caretaking, but clearly they aren't skis meant to tour in. I was gonna sell the bindings but don't know what to do with the skis. Keep em? Are they pretty good for anything in particular?

Hey man! I love my Gotamas overall, but they're not great park skis. They'll do the job if you're just having fun, but they're pretty heavy and I find it easy to get the tails tangled up just because they're so wide. They're awesome in powder, cruddy stuff, backcountry (or random hills around town) because they'll float over anything and they're built like tanks. Mine are something around a 2006 model--I think they may have tweaked them a bit over the years, but I've read generally good reviews about them. They're also stiff, so they're great at speed. We have an old ski hill here in Baltimore that doesn't operate anymore, but the county keeps the slope mowed. When we get a few inches of snow, I can hike up and ski down. These skis just float right on top of the slightest amount of snow. My kid's first times skiing were on that hill in a backpack carrier, so I'd say my 176s would work for someone well over my 150 pounds.

Fellow 33 year old MD park skiier here, awesome reading your post. Looking forward to getting a little one out on the slopes one day like yourself, not quite ready yet though lol. Living in PA now, I try to make it up to Roundtop once a week or so, usually after work. Would love to get a bunch of 30+ year old park skiers out one day. Best of luck with the little one man!

Ya man! That would be cool. I'm definitely doing the season pass next year. Vail buying Roundtop sent day ticket cost through the roof! They lowered the kids ticket age by a year, so now I have to buy two tickets and it's around $140 for a day to take the kid. I took her to Wisp a couple weeks ago because a few extra hours in the car and trying someplace new was worth saving $70. I didn't want to get their pass this year because MD and PA Covid policies were all over the place, and I didn't want to get screwed. The big bonus of the season pass will be those short after work sessions for myself. I'll have to practice my rails in the backyard so I can hang!

Hopefully they do Ullr Fest this year. We went to the last one they did and it was a blast.

welcome, yep there are still some older NS'er skiers here, and there will be more as this generation of park skiers get older. i'm 41 and still lap park.

Yeah the ticket prices are brutal, I was the same way with buying a pass during covid. I ended up buying one, they gave a good discount after cutting last year short. Around here we lost maybe a week or 2 of skiing as it’s usually over by the end of March anyway so I wasn’t too bummed about it. Ive still been able to get around 15-20 days so far, so it makes it worth it for me.

Make sure your daughter gets training from a freestyle team. Its the safest way to work up the skills and having fun while making ski friends

When the time comes, for sure. I want to get her in some kind of structured lessons or club or something next season. Right now she's most interested in racing, freestyle, adventuring ... pretty much whatever she's looking at at the moment. Haha! I have to say, I look at downhill racing completely different now knowing that's somebody's kid. Ooof. That's a tough sport to have your kid get into. Not that big air's any better, logically.

It's good as long as it's not too crowded. This virus stuff has made it different this season. Could say the same for anyplace.
