Handrail = steel or alluminium???

i was thinking of trying to do some urban stuff at the university in my town and i was wondering if there’s a way to know wether a handrail will slide or not. like how to know if it’s alluminum or steel

Rust? Steel. No rust? Aluminum. Aluminum oxide is white. Rust is rust colored. Easy.

Steel (except certain stainless alloys) is magnetic. Aluminum is not.

i’ve always thought no because i tried making a rail out of these alluminum volley ball net poles and it didn’t work but maybe. definitely not a great idea tho bc steel edges

A little bit more:

Is it painted? Yes = probably steel. No = probably stainless steel or aluminum.

Is it anodized? Yes = aluminum. No = stainless or steel.

Is it galvanized? Yes = steel. No = Stainless or aluminum.

Is it there no finish at all? Yes = stainless (or rarely aluminum). No = steel or most aluminum.

Is it magnetic? Yes = steel. No = Aluminum or (most) stainless.

Is there red/orange/brown rust? Yes = steel. No = Aluminum or stainless.


They look very different and sound different and even feel different (from heat transfer rates).

Yes and no. Edgless skis will slide it but regular skis edges will dig right in.

If you don't know for sure, just take a ski and see if the edges dig into the rail.

idk but anywhere that can afford stainless handrails can definitely afford a security guard that will kick you out real quick, better stick you shit first try lmao

Aluminium sticks like crazy. Stainless is pretty sticky. Rolled Steel is your best friend

Set up a jump at a spot a few years back on an aluminum dfd. Slid a ski on the rail after spending the petter part of an hour building the jump/in run to see if it would slide. Edges bit right into it and we felt like idiots. My homie was convinced he could slide is since he was missing pretty much all his edge underfoot on both skis. He went for it and instantly got watted. Pretty sure he landed on the last down of the dfd on his back. Made for a funny clip though haha lesson learned.
