so my local mountain bridger is getting fuckin cold this week. Below zero next 5 and backed out today at 2 degrees and -20 wind chill.

what will make y’all call it quits?

Once started a day at -12(F) because it had snowed and passholders got an hour of early mountain access that day. It was a fun morning, but these days I'd probably think twice about riding in sub-zero temps.

Maybe 10F now that I'm in the Twin Cities (and inside space is limited)... At Bridger I doubt I skied more than two days sub zero and they definitely had to be pow days. Lots of time inside with beer and french fries to fuel the few laps you end up taking lol

Lately when I’ve been going it’s been like 5-10f. -5 to 0 is probably about when I start questioning it.

yeah I have many days at sub zero....like -10 plus without windchill. and they were all fun, proper layering always helps.

But nowadays I would probably avoid unless the snow was good. No reason to freeze

probably 5-0 depending on windchill, at my hill its always hardpacked to shit or straight ice when its this cold so I just dont even bother unless we get a ton of snow...also rare in these temps here. and this next week its in the -10 to 0 degree range before even counting windchill so fuck that

Been -20°F all winter here. Usually it lasts for a week in january but it’s been lasting longer this year. Just wear warm clothes and it will be all right

if there is no wind I will go 0-5. If its windy and there are negative degree wind chills ill stay home. Even single digits with wind sucks

Just went to marmot this weekend, went down to -33c.
Wasn't too bad. I do lots of backyard hiking in -35 to -45 here when the city hills shut down. Cover up your skin, wear layers, and you're good.

I remember days in high school skiing in -20 or so. Would be layering like four sweatshirts those days (never wear a coat). Would still end up sweating after about 10 rope laps or so, and then youd just be even colder after you stop. gotta love the midwest

Alberta here so there's usually a week or two of sub -20 weather. -20 is okay as long as you keep moving but -30 is when it gets miserable and your toes start to feel like they are frozen together.

Had a nice day hiking rails at the city hill this weekend, closed due to temps it was maybe -15f. It's honestly super nice to get out when its -10f and below and sunny during the day. Night skiing that cold is a different story. Just gotta layer up.

imo skiing when it's 20 vs skiing when its -20 feels the same as long as there isn't a lot of wind.

seems like wind makes a big difference, I've had some days that were in the negatives and I never got cold, and some days where its mid teens and 40+ mph winds and its unbearable.

Wind is worse than cold. But yea depends on the snow. 40 and raining straight to -10 like in Vermont, I’ll pass. sunny no winds 18 inches of blower in CO and no lines with avy control all finished? It would get questionable at like -40. I would duct tape hand warmers to my face for that.

Single digits if theres no wind. Last weekend it barely got above 0F . -20°F at night. I skipped...I had the opportunity to work OT on Saturday so I gladly took it. It looks like this coming weekend will be the same nasty Cold. Usually these stretches of cold don't last this long. I guess its making up for the mild January the midwest had.

Skied Tremblant once at like -40°C (-40°F), it was pretty brutal but I managed by staying in the trees.

Did new years day one year at like -10 and a wind chill of probably -20. It was basically 2 runs, take a break, 2 runs take a break all day.

There's a little resort called Smokey Mountain where I work. Has some decent park features and pretty fun cliffy sections. Bad snow year this winter but usually it gets slammed with snow. There's a few fun zones that are a pretty short tour as well. A lot of good urban spots in town.

IF the lift or towrope is running I will take it. The colder you go the more bragging rights. Been in the midwest at -20F, but the coldest I've felt was at the top of Abay, -10F and blizzard with sustained winds to the point they shut the lift down. You can really see how mountaineers can just lie down and never get up in those conditions, you're good if you're exerting, but once you stop moving, you get cold damn quick. Also mittens are superior to gloves.

my local hill has been between 10F and -10F for the past week. brutal to get out of the warm car to boot up, but a few laps in you're warm.

Tremblant is the only place I had to stop and thaw my toes out in the lodge as a kid. I remember Quebec being like Finland, in that if it’s a bluebird day - it’s even colder.

When I was a kid I was out night skiing a week it was -30 at times and below 0 the whole time. Now fuck that honestly. I usually live at or next to ski areas so I can be more fussy.

Honestly tahoe didn't get very cold so probably the coldest I rode there was 5 ish, and here at crystal probably like 15.

I got frostbite in like 30 seconds at gore once back in the day. It was -35 ish and -72 wind chill. Shit was fucked. I spent the day(working) chilling in the lodge eating food, drinking coffee, and talking to the ladies that worked there. I opened the park and then just sat inside, shit was fucked and nobody was out anyway. Can't believe we even opened.

The coldest I've skied in was -25°F
I dont know what I was thinking. It was Pure misery as I wasn't into park yet so i got cold every time I was on the chair. I spent more time inside drinking coffee than out on the hill. I had to take my boots off every time I came in to thaw out my toes.

I did -25F actual and colder with windchill once. The snow was super weird and made a styrofoam sound when skiing over it, and it was slow too. It was kinda terrible because if you went fast at all you had to go inside to warm up. And I was dressed like such a marshmallow that it kinda limited mobility a bit.

Driving there and back was terrible because any liquid on the windshield would instantly freeze solid so the wipers and washer fluid were useless.

If it's sunny and no wind I'd draw the line at like -5˚. With wind tho that line is bumping up to like 15˚
