Hey guys. Since I must preach health and fitness I thought it was be fun for us older Newschoolers to compare what a park lap looks like now a days. I still try to progress and actually probably ski better now than ever at times. I can 100% day my grind in the gym allows me to continue to ski hard. I find I’m usually the oldest guy lapping or especially hiking rails which I find funny.
For me, I’m 28. On jumps I rarely go over 360 anymore, but enjoy 1s and 3s forward and switch. I don’t go upside down anymore but those backflips are calling me lately!
Rails I get occasional feds, front 4s. I’m fairly consistent with front swaps and back surface. I can switch hit/ switch 270 mellow rails and have 270s on pretty good.
Where’s my old park rats at? Give these kids some hope to be able to ski park into their 30s. Let’s hear your age and typical lap tricks!
Yes, I’m old but I still will lap the park. Jumps, boxes, tubes and some rails, I don’t get super crazy but will do 3’s, 180’s and ride switch. It does take longer to heal after an injury though. In my mid 40’s for reference.
I’m in my 30’s and feel like I’m just getting started! I’m spinning up to 7 on our medium jump line, flipping both ways, working on getting 270 on/off more consistently, and trying to get corked! Need to work on spins with grabs as my weakest area.
Im 33. Got one of them career, so getting hurt can only happen from November to end of March. If I get hurt and cant go back to work, I will have a very difficult year financially.
My local hill doesnt have a park. Or if there is, everything is ground level. So, to make due and still get my jolleys trying to get vertical drop. On jumps, I can usually land everything up to 7 on first try, cork 5 and 7 when Im feeling hot, got the backs and fronts but only in pow and Im learning how to rodeo 7.
For rail, its been a while. But I can hop on a rail in all directions and spin 450 out with some practice. Love doing one foot backslides as a jaw dropper trick.
On down day and recovery days, I love carving fresh cordoroy. Getting all the way down and just letting the skis do their job is fun as fuck.
But nothing beats touring. The peace of the climb, the problem solving on the way up and down, the view and the deep untracked powder is why I will hike for 3hrs for one descent.
Its still not over. Never blew a knee, never got carted off the mountain. Im celebrating my 30th season straight of skiing this year. In fact, I threw this down a couple days ago. (And yes, that day took me out for 2 days from a pulled muscle, or tendon)

Early 30s but I’m skiing better than I ever have in my life. Never had a park growing up so I’m just now learning rails. Tubes and boxes are pretty much locked just trying to get used to flat bars, kinks, etc. 1’s (forward and switch) locked in my sleep on pretty much anything with a stank shifty I’m trying to make better.
I honestly don’t have the desire to learn more spins. Would prefer to learn rail combos and front/backflip instead. I also don’t know if I’m a park rat, per se, but even at this age I’m riding it more than I ever did because I never got the chance growing up.

all about them squats and deadlifts and ab workouts....if you only get stronger over time in live you’ll only get better at skiing too.
last few years I’ve been working on 10’s, sw 9’s....hoping to lock in a sw misty and rodeo 9 this year....have been fantasizing about doubles since college, but am biding my time to crank a few to powder before just whipping them out. For the life of me still trying to nail 270 on to down rails...but got my first absolutely perfect one a month ago.
I plan to be hucking till old age. Don’t let anything stop you...protect your knees at all costs.
The fucked up thing is that "old" here is a measure of how badly you've fucked yourself up skiing, and not whether you would otherwise be in your physical prime at 28. Concussions and knees. Is there a worse sport?
Even MMA fighters do well until their bodies naturally age.

I’ve had 3 diagnosed. One of which put me in the ICU with a hemorrhage and seizure.
38 here. I grew up watching freestyle evolve but really didn’t get into it until later on just because skiing was culturally irrelevant with my family and where I grew up. Skiing became something to distract me from the pressures of adult life after college and getting into freestyle was my way of “connecting with my youth” I guess. To be honest, I am still adding to my tick list and probably skiing with more style now than I ever have, but again, that is probably because I got into the game late.

100% agree. I’m the strongest I’ve ever been but the toll of years of injury add up for sure.

This might be one of the most Lit post's on newchooler's these days. I really hope to still be sending tricks like that in my 40's. Damn that is fucking tight.
Thanks peeps! I’ve had the good fortune of avoiding any serious injuries in my ski life. That’s helped my longevity a ton, and I don’t take it for granted.
I’m 37 I still take a park lap once a day, but my all mountain skiing isn’t much different than my park minus built jumps and rails, lots of butters, I’ll 50/50 a rail maybe 2 off but that’s it, I was never into rails, nose block, butters, shifties , tail drags and 3s are my go to , like larger jumps with large landings, but I prefer to do all of that out of the park more than in. I’m still progressing tho I’m def not going backwards, I expect some mellow backies , rodeo 3s and some flat spins in my future and don’t expect to regress anytime soon
I understand what you mean here. Considering that 12 year old kids are doing double corks, when you hit mid 20s, I feel like it is the “older” scene in park haha
I’m approaching 25 years old. do backflips, flatspin 3s and sometimes 5, and spin from 180-540 consistently, a couple variations of 270s on rails... livin’ the average joe life on skis, but still having the most fun. I am at the point where I am more excited to learn rail tricks as opposed to stuff on jumps haha

I'm in my upper 30s and just getting started. I never skied as a kid because I grew up in IL and my family just didn't do it. I learned only 4 years ago. My tricks are very basic beginner stuff but fun because its something new amd exciting.

I'm 37. and can say I skied for 30+ years. I still do stupid shit.
but damn man, landing shitty stuff, diaster on stuff not going right, landing on shit etc, crashing into trees, hucking cliffs etc.... the kneees.... the knees. it really doesnt help with the history, today skiiing, my non twisted, non dislocated kneecap, my none bursitt knee, aka my "healthy" knee hurts more than my latest inured one... Also my back has taken way to many hits, so i've stayed of inverted stuff for a few years, but I feel like getting back into them for backcountry landings.

I’m 26 so not exactly old. But as a UK skier I only get to hit jumps once or twice a year when I go abroad so I usually end up launching myself when the opportunity arises. Landed my first park backy, fronty and 5 last trip so that was a good week (felt about 60 years old the week after though)
I just try to stay in the gym a lot and play a lot of contact sports. I get as much as I can out of my body in terms of sport / taking hits so I try to keep it as strong and flexible as I can which helps a lot
Only 28 but I feel like since I don't skate or bike or walk places as much as I used to my legs are weak and it makes park skiing less fun. I feel like I'm going to tear something, or it's just harder to do certain tricks.

Get back at it!! Im sure life has made its changes but, go skate, go ride a bike, make time for it.
25 and just started skiing park this year. I was able to learn 1's, 3's, backs, a bunch of grabs, and just generally went bigger this season than ever before. Unfortunately, I dislocated my hip last week over-rotating a backflip and overshooting the jump. But this thread makes me stoked to keep progressing and enjoying this sport as long as possible.
This thread is awesome. I turned 30 last year but I just pretend I'm 20 lol. Motivation to progress has never been higher. Unfortunately ski hills are closed where I live due to COVID but I'm still trying to get out doing stuff. This was the other week. JP Auclair always said "you get better with age" 990376

op 28 is nothing. Ppl like bernie rosow were throwing sw cork 14s at age 32. And that was back in 2009 he is like 45 yrs old now.
aging is partly inevitable, but partly optional.
Your joints and flexibility are going to gradually decline from age 16 on, but you can stay pretty athletic through middle age if you eat right and only do drugs that dont fuck up your athleticism.
About 1 out of 2 16 yr olds can slam dunk a basketball.
Meanwhile, about 1 out of 100 heavy drinkers/chainsmokers can slam dunk a basketball. Alcohol and tobacco literally destroy your body.
im not trying to bash on alcohol and tobacco, because they are alot of fun. But dont think your going to be lighting up the terrain park when your a full blown alcoholic and cigarette addict.
if you are a true ubermensche, as in you dont give a fuck about which drugs some shiteating dea agent wants you to consume( ie. Alcohol and nicotine), then pick up an opium habit instead of alcohol/cigs. If opium was prevalent and cheap like it would be in a libertarian paradise then the negative aspects of any resulting dependence would be incredibly minimised. If you could buy opium cigarettes at 7-11 for 6 bucks a pack then nobody would be going through withdrawal or having to prostitute themselves for drug money so they could get well.
stimulants likewise dont destroy your body, although i dont think crack or mountains of cocaine are going to be good for you.
but i remember andrew holson talking about his adhd med addiction he had. As far as that goes (adderall/ritalin/focalin/vyvance)... they might actually be performance enhancing.
In my experience, addiction to a drug that doesnt harm your body is only a problem when not enough drugs is a problem.
If a 6 dollar pack of opium cigarettes could get you through your day, there would be alot more guys in their 30s and 40s throwing down in the park.

I have to actually worry about school, work, and other stuff. I have always wondered how people get home after they get injured. I have a 2 hr commute to the local hill, and if I blew my knee, how tf would I drive home? I don't have my parents to pick me up like I did growing up.

I'm coming up on 35 and having the best season of my life. I played hockey growing up at a pretty high level so that took up the majority of my winters as a kid, and then played college lacrosse, so I didn't really have a full ski season until grad school.
I ski at Snow Summit every weekend now and the 40 degree sunny weather makes progression so much easier than it was on the east coast. I spin 3's and 5's and hit most rails, but my favorite tricks are just massive floating shiftys off of the biggest jumps in the park.
Maching into a jump, popping super hard and landing perfectly in the sweet spot to me is the best feeling you can get skiing, be it in a sunny spring park or fresh powder. No spinning necessary, just flying.

31 here, have a 6mo old too. (like others have said) I do tricks I know I can do, usually with low consequence conditions. I'll still work on adding a poke or shifty or different grab when I'm feeling saucy. Lots of switch skiing, still go upside down.
Hit my backyard rail with a baby monitor in my pocket this fall.
