Whats good with Bindings

Besides Dims whats the point of upgrading bindings and who care about them being 100 grams lighter or whatever

but beyond DINs, they have different characteristics in how they feel, how they click in, how much maintenance they require, and how durable they are. opinions will also vary regarding how much they pre-release, i.e. come off when you didn't want them to/you don't believe they should have

weight isn't a big deal real but some people really prefer light setups. without being a douche bag, most good skiers aren't concerned with the weight of their bindings (pivots are the most popular in freeride for years and they're the heaviest) but we all have our preferences

if you're new and/or don't ski very hard, you shouldn't worry about it too much honestly

biggest thing for me when i switched from griffons to pivot 12s was how much closer my boot felt to my ski.

I never care how much they weigh nor do i notice but I always go with the all metal FKS or Look Pivots because they are much more durable. I have broke too many plastic bindings so all metal it is.

I'm on griffons rn, I wanna try some pivot 15s so bad. They seem like a superior binding and Look appears like more of a down to earth company can't lie.

Mainly for durability, or if the binding are old they can become less reliable and shops won’t mount them.

These are the main characteristics people care about. More/less isn't better necessarily. It's just 100% preference.

stack height - How close your foot is to the ski. Higher gives you more leverage over the edge (racers even use risers sometimes), lower affords better ski feel

weight - duh

elastic travel - how much your boot can move before the binding pops you out

ease of clipping in in powder

looks/appearance (pun intended)

why 15's? Griffons are 13 dins as the max, Pivot 14's would be the most ideal next binding. Or is it the 15 toe piece that is grabbing your attention?

The big difference between the 14 and the 15 is the 14 is plastic while the 15 is metal. The best option if you plan to be below 15 din because it's just as durable as the 18 but cheaper.

Honestly most people are fine on plastic bindings but I like metal ones because they are more durable and I’m not easy on gear. I’ve already hit a few big ass rocks and logs hiding in the powder this season, also hit a tree really hard and broke a ton of branches off it lol

The Pivot has a toe/heel stack height of 18mm/19mm and the Griffon has a 19mm/22mm. I have pairs of both bindings on various skis and I would consider myself fairly, “in tune,” with my gear but I can’t feel THAT much of a difference

maybe it’s a number of factors not just stack height but idk i don’t think there’s any denying pivots feel different than griffons

When I went from Griffs to Attacks, I really only noticed the low stack height of the Attacks at slower speeds on groomers. Def couldn’t tell once I got up to speed and especially off piste. Never tried Pivots but some ppl seem to love the extra flex feeling they get from the short mount distance.

What I do notice is the taller stack height of sth2s. Maybe it was the rubber damp pad underneath, but I just felt pretty disconnected from the skis/snow and wasn’t a fan. Then again, they were on a pair of heavy ass Bent Chetler 120s (pre-lightweight core) and feel like I ought to give them a fair shake on something narrower one day.

I mean there’s definitely a slight difference but... numbers don’t lie I guess is my point

all i’m sayin is they feel different to me. with those numbers that’s overall 10% lower averaged out between toe and heel. 10% difference is sizable for most things
