Idea proposal

Someone might've tried this before but i got a idea for a thin mounting plate you mount on your skis of choice and screw your bindings into the plate. Mounting your bindings into the plate makes it so you are able to swap out bindings so you don't need bindings for every pair of skis.

Thoughts on this? going to start designing a plate soon

I think there's a market for this. Binding companies don't have any incentive to produce it (they'd sell fewer bindings), but as an aftermarket product I could see it. There's already a fairly large community installing threaded inserts one by one, which is not easy. I'm sure it's a liability nightmare, but Cast seems to have been able to figure that part out. PM if you want to chat more about the design. I have some ideas.

This is one of my main constraints I have. Been thinking of ways where bindings will be as low as possible

I think there's a way to do it where the only increase in stack height is the plate itself, which could be relatively thin if everything is screwed/anchored/set properly into the ski.

i think it begs the question, "what would this do better than quiver killers?"

just for your information and context, you're aware of the Line reactor binding, right? it had a plate and all the Line skis at the time came with a 4-hole pattern so you could switch your bindings to whichever skis you wanted to use, like you would with a snowboard or skiboards. wonderful idea, but it was heavy and breakable and the project failed pretty badly. iirc it was a major reason they basically dropped their whole team except pollard the next year

Forgot about quiver killers. Will try and think of something that will have better usability

Your plate would need to be 8-9mm thick unless you are going to use screws that don't come with the bindings. The only way I could see getting around this would be to screw from the bottom of the plate into the binding then screw the plate to the ski so the plate would be the thickness of the screw head. That idea is stupid though as you would have to unscrew the plate every time to take the bindings off making inserts a better solution.

A track style binding would be the best way to do it. Being able to buy just the plates for a demo binding would mean that you'd only need one pair.

Line tried this with the Reactor. And then K2 more recently tried it maybe 10-12 years ago. In theory great idea but when it comes to actually using it it’s not that great of an idea.

If you fell at an angle, the reactor brakes twisted and didn’t go down. So your ski didn’t have brakes.
I had a pair. I returned them.

yeah i watched multiple pairs break for no apparent reason on small/medium stuff. great idea but clearly rushed to market

Binding Plates aren't really new, Marker for example has them.



Or am I on the wrong track? :D
However they are more for racing and are pretty thick, so you are quite far away from the ski and the snow.
Designing a thinner plate which holds together could be a challenge and I can't imagine that the bigger companys on the binding market haven't tried this already.
On the other side, they could be holding it back, because it would definetly crash their sales on bindings.
