Slide off demo binding for air travel

A few years ago I started buying skis with demo bindings in part because it made it easier to have a quiver along and everyone can use the skis pretty quickly.

A friend asked, hey, have you ever tried to see if the demo binding slides off the rails so then it would make packing the skis easier for travel. I tried, and in fact could easily slide all the demos off their track.

I'm a bit worried that TSA will forget to put them back in the ski bag but it would mean I can take 3 pairs and nicely package them up. Currently I have to go through gyrations to get them to fit in the boundary roller and then TSA opens up the bag and messes it all up which then seems to cause tears in the bag due to skis bouncing around in there.

It would also allow me to bring extra skis and take the bindings as carry on for weight.

Thoughts?

If you did that take the rest of the binding on carry on, that said, if you aren't super great at tuning and setting bindings wouldn't recommend puking them off. I can't imagine the portion you remove on the bindings would save that much weight but maybe? I'm not familiar with them enough to say.

Totally comfortable dealing with bindings. The weight isn't huge but it's something, 4 sets of heel and toe pieces probably = another pair of skis. The trouble I have is I have a Dakine boundary roller which is AWESOME but with bindings i have to kind of play jenga to pack it but then TSA messes it up and it causes the bag to get cut by skis bouncing around loose. By taking toe/heel pieces off I could bind the skis together better like a bunch of 2x4's.

sounds smart to me but how hard are you skiing? are demo bindings gonna be able to hold up to the abuse that you give them? I have a friend who has broken I think 4 pairs of bindings at this point, and like 3 of them were demo bindings

So I tried it on the current trip. I put the bindings into a plastic bin and used an old exercise band to keep it closed. Wrote BINDINGS and contact info in case TSA decided to play with them. Seemed to work really well and I could have tossed them in carry on for weight savings. Whoever handled the bag did manage to break the plastic bin I put them in on the return flight.

As far as demo bindings holding up I haven't had any problems in the 3 years since I started acquiring skis only with demo bindings.

One bonus of sorts was getting all the snow and water out of the binding before packing them in this way, no rusty edges from extra water.
