Dear Groomers of NS

JpurdI grew up skiing at Loon and it would dump out and I would show up to the mtn with 90% of it groomed. Such a bummer. Living in Colorado now gives me a much better appreciation for ungroomed runs.


Edit: I'd also have to imagine that they are trying to maintain a solid snowpack for the spring when doing this?

theabortionatorDamn, after a night of grooming in the rain and still making the park sweet for the childrens a little bummed reading this. I get it but come on dude. Imagine working a sleep deprivation job overnight and trying to make things sweet and all you ever hear is complaints. I get that you dnt hate groomers but still.

Also for east coast hills a lot of them arent steep and it skis like ass unless partially groomed. I do like the half grooms on some of those runs though. Both so you have the option and the mid day lanes that arent fucked and also the ability to gain speed in the groom then cut out for turns.

But yeah I get it but chill. I just finished a 10 hour shift grooming in a friggin downpour. Cut me some slack if I seem bitchy.

eheathMaybe if the snowpack was low, grooming it would be better than letting it get skied out.

Aren't we talking about a good amount of low angle runs too? You might get a couple good turns on the headwall but then you're just going straight down a single track to get to the lift. If they groom the low angle run, they're more skiable especially for less experienced skiers.

JpurdYeah definitely a lot of low angles, especially when you bottom out at the runout to the lifts. It was always a bummer to see groomed blacks but at the end of the day, when all that snow is going to end up in the woods, and these mtns are already hurting for snow most seasons, I can see why they want it to get packed down and hold out for April.

eheathMost beginner and intermediate skiers aren't good enough/confident enough to ski non-groomed runs 🤷‍♀️

Pilsbywhere I ski if we didnt groom our traverses i would get allot less runs because it would take longer to get to and back from the pow... sorry you live on the ice coast and your 500 vertical gets groomed when you have a wet ass pow day. sucks to suck

Just kidding we love you.... But really, next time it snows, all of you should call in sick coincidentally on the same day so nothing gets groomed. Outside of New England (even they can ruin a fresh dump), all these east coast places fucking goom again in the morning. When it snows 6" after closing, I wanna see 6" not 1".

Curious though, does it feel bad grooming 6-12"+ of snow? Kinda like destroying a child's Christmas presents and leaving their remnants under the tree.

freeskibum82When it snows im not skiing the trails. i definitely appreciate the groomer spending all night making sure cloud at gore is groomed. could you imagine the trek across that in even 3" of snow? Same for wood in/out. Hell, even tannery or the push from straight brook quad to get to rumor.

I'd say the OP needs to explore their mountain more instead of sticking to marked trails. when it snows, head to the woods or the steeps and leave the groomed trails for when you are tired and dont want to ski bumps all the way down to hit the lodge for that apres beer.

I love layout of that mtn. Also just saw they replaced darkside i think? Ive been once or teice since the triple got replaced. I miss lapping straightbrook woth good skiiing and no crowds even when the gondola was jacked.

freeskibum82The park is ok. nothing crazy. jumps are small but a bunch of vishnu kids with no poles seem to enjoy them. Im at gore because of covid and to ski the woods and steeps, not the park. Gore has never had a strong park. They are known for the woods. I agree straight brook laps use to be good but now they groom the ever living snot out of hawkeye instead of letting it bump up so it gets jerrys now. Makes double barrel and chatamac and hawkeye woods skied out quickly. they did replace the double and absolutely murdered darkside glades in the process.. sucks. its a fixed grip quad no faster than the double but it goes up to the top of rumor now. They widened the top from rumor to openpit to accommodate and ruined the skiers right down to Lies. I just wish the mountain would get their act together with opening lifts and trails in a timely fashion. too many times i've gone down to the straightbrook triple from pine knot to find it not open yet because "ski patrol is still clearing trails" dude.. its 9:30.... It will be a welcomed 21/22 season when VT opens back up to NYers (well.. those who follow the rules that is)

Hoping next year i visit for christmas, can hit a few mtns and build a setup at oak.

you guys resorts groom slopes in the morning? all resorts i know of groom late at night, and if it snows it snows and that's it. only the easiest green beginner slopes get groomed in the morning. also as a ski instructor it would be a nightmare if i had to teach some beginner in 10 cm of fresh snow.
