Mips dying out

Anyone else noticed that mips is dying out? I guess a better way to put it is that anyone noticed it being phased out and a lot of big helm companies using new tech such as anon with that green fibre shit and poc with spin blue stuff, is this because mips is now considered dated and obsolete with todays safety standards?

no it’s not really considered dated, just that companies would rather offer their own in house version than rely on another company for it. aren’t giro and smith still using it?

Yeah thats true. Yeah as far as i know, i saw a smith helmet with some different tech in it recently so it’s possible they are phasing it out aswell

The ones that have moved away will have been paying to license the tech & branding so they’ll have done that to be at the front of helmet tech, while they developed their own version, lowering the cost per helmet, to increase their margin.

its a risk though, because MIPS became a by-word and the market leader for rotational impact protection and, if the brands moving away from it can’t make a distinction between the systems and convince people to buy their new system, it could mean a big drop in sales.

Agreed. I think MIPS has become synonymous with safety for me and a lot of other people, so it'll take a fair few years for companies offering their own solution to garner the same trust from customers.

I'll stick with MIPS as long as giro is using it.

It's still very much a thing. Smith is continuing it into the 2021/22 season. Alot of companies are coming out with their own version, but I'll stick with the original. Combine a light weight shell with MIPS and Koyroid and you have one of the safest helmets you can get.

It's not outdated at all, as other people said, other companies are just developing their own takes on mitigating rotational forces. SUper good news because this competition should help progress helmet safety tech for everyone.

Yeah this exactly, it costs a decent amount on money to be able to use the name MIPS so companies just came up with their own version, because from an engineering standpoint it’s not that hard to copy.
