Replying to At home helicoil kit discussion
Whats up Ns, I recently pulled out the heel on one of my skis and wanted to helicoil it. I was unable to find any of the dimensions of the stock screws that came with my marker jesters and I was in a bit of a time crunch and was not able to get them ordered before I left. What I ended up doing was going to O'reilly auto parts and getting a helicoil kit from there. Then I went and bought some 6mm-1.00 x12mm machine screws. Just by comparing the machine screws with pictures of the stock marker screws, it appears the machine screws have one more thread than the stock ones. While a helicoil is generally stronger than not using one, I was wondering what your guys thoughts were with using these different screws.
My intuition tells me that more threads means more contact area which should ultimately be stronger. However, more threads also means there is less wood in between each thread which makes me wonder if they might actually be weaker, since the wood is thinner and may shear easier.
Have any of you guys done this? Any ideas as to what thought process is correct (stronger or weaker)?
