It’s extremely evident that just watching videos is not enough to teach myself park skills. Anyone with ikon want to make $100 and help me out for half a day??


this sounds absurd but I’m way behind my peers by only having two seasons of skiing in, and my bf and other friends snowboard (womp womp)

* I’m aware of private lessons but copper’s start at $700/half day so that’s a hell fucking no

BASICALLY how to do anything on a box other than hit it straight on, rails are scary af but im willing to try, and how to hit jumps doing something other than getting a few inches off the ground. I often catch an edge on the landing.

Everyone starts as a beginner. I’d be down to help, but I’m staying at winter park. I know you said videos don’t help but a trick that helps is to practice jumping 90 and emphasizing getting your shoulders around with your legs

Holy shit, $700 for a half day? A lot of teams will let you join them for a day and get free coaching, though maybe that's not what you're looking for.

Free tip: roll up to a box slowly, jump a full 90 degrees, focus on keeping your weight forward (think of keeping your front hand down), let your momentum bring you to switch. You can now slide sideways

They'll let you try a day for free. Depends on the program and location but weekend teams are around 2-6ish grand for the season.

Just commit and slowly progress it will happen it takes time. also always look where you want to go spot the landing on a jump look for the end of the rail it helps a lot

Wait what the fuck? 700 for a day? That's absurdity. Anyway, if I were you, and we're pretty close actually, I suck at park, I'd find a nice low to the ground fat tube to practice on. Hike it over and over for practice, and you will get better. Practice popping to 90 degrees on flat ground and putting weight on your downhill foot. That weight distribution is extremely unnatural at first and you will likely slide out the back, but then you'll get it. Wear like 3 layers of sweatpants for cushioning and a hoodie. You will likely find people are very supportive since you're trying to get better. There's no magic code, it's a leap of faith. You've got this.

You shouldnt even be paying random people to show you how to park. Hanging around a few crews and getting stoked off their flow will help a lot. Someone on NS will team up with ya in exchange for good company

Make friends who kids in the park at your local. Ask them how to do something your trying to learn. The community is pretty helpful and I think that's how most people wouldn't mind showing you some things. Thats how I learned the basics and now I ski with that crew daily.

Damn are you supposed to put weight on the downhill foot? I’m just figuring out rails now, and I keep my weight over my back foot. Good to know I gotta practice that

Weight should be centered, but when sliding on snow your weight usually goes back to compensate for deceleration

well i mean u shldnt really be putting all ur weight on one foot or the other, but yea for me a good amount of my weight is on my front foot, and that will help when u start doing down rails and stuff like that. it was really scary to put weight on the front cause it feels like like ur gonna catch ur front edge, but thats happened to me like once on a super rought tube.

Just try try and try again, pick a box and hike it, dont take the lift. You dont need to pay someone. Remember to commit to what you're trying. You will fall a lot, that's okay. Some good advice on sliding boxes already in this thread. Even if all your friends snowboard, if they have half a brain they should be able to tell you what you are doing wrong when you do fall, assuming they are decent at park.

Consistency is key but having help is important so you’re not out there making the same mistakes repeatedly for hours until you get tired. Oh, and keep your legs shoulder width apart too!
