Gimme some help

so i've been skiing for most of my life and I've never hit a rail so i thought why not ask the wonderful people of newschoolers. i want to get into park but its sorta intimidating. my brother tried to hit one the other day and he ended up with a bloody lip. so gimme some tips on how to hit one.

what do you have to work with? are there small beginner rails at your park? and/or can you set up a little rail, maybe a little PVC, in your backyard or at a nearby hill?

boxes, some pvc, and a pipe and thats it. there arnet any jumps set up yet bc lack of snow

and its a pretty small park. mostly beginner setups and smaller rails

Hey man I’d say work on sliding boxes first. Try just jumping to 90 on snow when ur just standing there then commit to it on a box. Keep working at that then try it onto a small tube or flat bar. Keep going from there

It's all commitment man, if you don't fully commit to it that's when you're gonna hurt yourself, make sure to have an aggressive stance no back seat, skis should be shoulder width apart when on the rail and definitely visualize the whole thing right before you drop in. You got this man I wanna see a clip of you stomping it

I say go with the box or PVC, whichever one seems more approachable to you, and just jump on an lean forward. Make sure you turn a full 90* with your skis. The first one ain't gonna be pretty but it's going to let you know generally how the jump on feels. I suggest a PVC basically lying on the ground, maybe some snow under it to elevate it a few inches. Basically no risk of injury and you can hit it hit it hit it til you get comfy with it

I remember psyching myself out thinking rails were so much harder on skis than snowboards (I could slide them on a board). I was so wrong.

Try the box and getting comfortable there. Then try incorporating a 90 degree movement. Then try to do the 90 degree before you slide. Then move to pvc. One thing to note: boxes are kind of sticky compared to rails/tubes/pvc. They kind of grab onto your skis. So keep that in mind

Also remember to look towards the end of the tube/box while keeping your forward hand down by your leading knee. Keep your legs shoulder width apart and I always gotta remind myself to pop up and over the lip with my momentum so I don’t get stuck in that awkward body position that causes you to slide out. I’m sure that constant reminder will go away after time though...
