So i made my own rail

so i live in chicago and have been really itching to ski. I finally decided to try to make my own rail. i was limited by what i could transport in and out of an apartment building and what i could carry in a subaru empreza. Any suggestions on how to improve on pvc rail construction?

i felt myself getting stuck a bit with no visible roughness on the rail afterwards so anyone know some good ways to make it more slick?

Did you try rubbing more snow on it? You could also try dish soap to get it greased up

If you are skiing on new skis or sharp edges they will cut into the Pvc because it’s a much softer material. I would try detune your edges underfoot

I usually mix laundry detergent with water and throw it on. Lasts a little while but you have to reapply like once every hr of use

PVC slides fine unless it's fucked up. It's your edges most likely, detune them underfoot.

i'm a big fan of Pam on backyard PVCs, makes it fly, and yeah if you have sharp edges they might be scraping against the plastic a little. detune a little if that's palatable to you

looks like a fun setup. also as you practice you'll get smoother on the rail and better at managing speed so that'll help. plus hitting the rail slower than you want is good practice for your balance skills ha

thanks for the pam and laundry detergent suggestions!!

i did detune my skis before hitting it but i had never detuned before so maybe i didn’t go far enough with it.

its not the best rail i’ve ever hit but i had a ton of fun with it yesterday and at the very least it will help me stay comfortable while i’m at home between trips to real places to ski.

Gunna try to grab a 10ft 10in diameter pvc pipe later today to set another little one up right next to it

Pvc is scary slick, as mentioned most likely an edge issue. Hell yeah though!
