Does anyone on here work for Vail Resorts?

Not the resort itself, not one of the many they’ve swallowed up. I’m talking about Vail Resorts (stock ticker: MTN), like Broomfield corporate. If you work for them, please come forward. We’re not going to shame you (yes we are) but we want to know how you justify working for the evil empire that aims to dramatically change skiing for its stockholders (and already has).

Please enlighten us and tell us your story. We totally won’t devise a plan to try and dissolve your company from the inside. I’m just interested in knowing how you sleep at night - they say even good men were convinced to work for the Third Reich in WW2.

*Edit: please excuse the grotesque use of hyperbole. I’m just genuinely curious about hearing from one of our own that works in the Death Star (ah man, hyperbole again).

But you're right, there isn't jobs for everyone, but which well paying industry do you know of that doesn't have a competitive work force? Like that's not an argument at all IMO, nobody gets a job at a company to move up the ranks with their friends.

Also, if you don't like your job, quit, there are hundreds of garbage jobs you could try instead, I don't really have sympathy for somebody who is upset their entry level ski resort job isn't paying them enough.

I'll go ahead and respond to this, I assumed you were just trying to be a cunt. I was referring to jobs that pay $12/hr or less which in most places isn't a living wage, yet many people have these jobs, they will hold two bad paying jobs (both part time) to make ends meet. This is a very normal thing in the USA, I didn't make this up, it's just a fact.

Now i'm not trying to argue whether people should get a livable wage, of course they should, but millions of people work for this level of wage. My only point I was making is that Vail pays their seasonal entry level employees like shit and this effects them, one example is that they do struggle with having a full liftie staff at most resorts, you see ads for lifies every year. But yet they continue to pay these employees the same bad wages every year and treat them bad every year, I believe vail would like to pay them more but thats something they'd have to change from the top and its just not reasonable to expect that from a for-profit company.

Now go ahead and call me a bad mod and a terrible person for listing out some facts for you.

I mean quitting your job because you don't make enough money is certainly reasonable, but you also took a low paying job so you only have yourself to blame. Being a liftie isnt a career, its a seasonal ski bum job.

I work at a vail resort. The only way to get promoted past team lead is to blindly kiss corporate’s ass. I’ve only been here for two years and I’ve already seen highly qualified people get booted and others not getting a promotion over someone who will do whatever daddy vail says. Some of the most experienced/ best park builders in the world have to work a second job just to afford a house within 30 minutes of the resort. It’s honestly just sad to see such passionate people get their souls crushed when they find out having a job that is their passion can’t even afford them a decent one bedroom apartment in town. When I was young I watched the STP (Snow Park Technologies) tv show. From then on working as a park builder has been my dream. Now after meeting and working with some of the OG STP guys and seeing their look on Vail and the industry as a whole I’m starting to lose my stoke. I mean guys run a quarter million dollar machine 9 hours a night for $14 an hour. In any other industry running heavy machinery even starting out pay at least double what vail pays. It’s just sad. Why can’t resorts just be cool anymore? I grew up skiing a family owned bump in Ohio where I knew everyone and could do whatever the absolute fuck I wanted. Boy is it a bit of a culture shock.

hope you don't mean this counts for "normal" jobs aswell i mean its fair to take a job because you gotta pay your bills but still be pissed that you are getting paid shit. Like imagine growing up near some smaller resort, you just have to take the liftie job or whatever because there is nowhere the job amount of bigger cities.

You're not totally wrong but even playing along with the corpo stuff isn't enough. In my experience, proximity to senior leadership seems to matter the most. Unless you have a personal senior advocate who takes you under their wing and brings you along with their successes you're lost in the noise of hundreds of other rotating names that come through every year. I was there year round for 5 years and watched from a distance as several of those types of situations play out and they all moved onwards and upwards. You end up developing solid relationships with other employees on or around your level but unless you have an office close to someone on the SLT, good luck. My 'office' was at 11,000ft and quite frankly, I think many senior leaders in VR would rather parks didn't exist. At a a minimum many straight up refuse to take parks seriously out of spite or pre existing biases that are decades old.

I did every single in-house leadership/talent development course that they have available to employees without an invite. The Leadership Essentials program, Insights, Base Camp, and probably a few others I can't think of. Internally, when it comes to advancement and potential job opportunities, none of the things that you would think would make a difference seem to make a difference at all.

You'd think someone's job in Broomfield would be an internal talent scout or sorts.. seeing who's taking initiative, doing well on yearly reviews, doing the trainings, getting the certifications, nope. Doesn't exist.

As far as those SPT guys go, I had a few opportunities to work with them over the years and they're legit af. They run a tight ship and appreciate hard work and guys with good experience or guys who are willing to learn on the fly. It's a shame VR is so anti-fun and let all their events die. I have serious doubts if the US Open will ever be back at Vail and that was the last event they had left.

Yeah I've been told that too over the years and I've always looked at that as a lazy and passive aggressive type of behavior.

I looked at available jobs every once in a while but nothing ever seemed to check all my boxes for committing to a move. Jobs just always seemed to get filled by the time you hear about them in passing.

Would also be nice if the tech they rely on actually worked.

Before I left BC I was looking at a transfer to Afton Alps because I knew I was moving to the area and I had to browse the job board from my phone or my personal laptop because half a dozen posts weren't appearing internally. Literally the exact opposite of what it was supposed to be doing. I put a ticket in with help desk to let them know and they were just like "I dunno, ticket closed"

Even though it's supposed to be against policy I know for a fact that they've filled positions internally without posting them. I also know for a fact that they don't give interviews for jobs posted internally if they already have the person selected.

But I guess that type of shit is going to happen anywhere.

Honestly, I'd love to work for the company again solely because they have the most resources at their disposal right now. It would be so easy to make some seriously positive changes at one of these tiny mountains they've bought. I was just tired of treading water at BC and in that valley more than anything else.

If you arent gonna pay resort employees 15$ an hour to start, you need to at least make the pay increase up to 15 $ an hour happen very quickly.

The idea smarty pants ming put forward that the business model simply wont work paying 15$ an hour to employees is pure bullshit. If the min wage gets bumped to 15$ the ski industry will get along just fine

I was gonna type out a great report about how I hate Vail and am looking to quit in the near future. Then I started reading this thread and yeah... damn this website has some spicy forums

Aplarently they were accidently paying me the cert 2 wage of 16.25 all last season. I am cert 1. This season 3 week into the season, I was told that the correction will be made, I got a 20% pay deduction, there was no grace period. I make less than $1000 a month, my rent is $370 and i hae to borrow money from my parents to live. If it weren't for them I would be financially trapped here. Also, most of our benefits are gone this season. People are saying this is Rob Katz last season buts thats too good to be true. And "ski town mcdonalds" is becoming a common phrase among instructors.
Great place to live 10/10 would be a 6 foot, 140 pound instructor again. Great weight loss program i lost 15 pounds in a month.

Fuck that dude. Sounds like ass. Meanwhile, lessons and private guiding is literally the number one revenue driver for a ski resort. Talented certified instructors are critical to their operations. I’m sorry but that’s just pure greed.

Taught skiing for Boyne at Big Sky last year. Seems they actually do care about their people and recognize how important the instructors are for the operation. Difference between Boyne and Vail? Vail has public shareholders. Hmmmmm..

Thanks for twisting my words dude, this kid clearly works 20 hours a week, you can't expect to live ANYWHERE working part time.

That being said, affordable housing is a huge problem in all ski towns, I live in a ski town, I've seen tons of people get kicked out of rentals so people can rent it out nightly, everyone I know that owns a house moves to SLC or heber valley to get something affordable.

Ski towns aren't affordable, I agree with you and others that Vail needs to do a better job at providing housing and a livable wage. But everyone who does these jobs chooses to do them, nobody is forcing people to move to ski towns and live in debt. This is going to turn into a huge issue soon, covid has accelerated it, but resorts will have a tough time hiring low paying positions without increasing their pay. This will be reflected in food prices, parking, day tickets and passes... and guess what? Everyone will complain about these price increases, but hopefully these workers can make more money in the future.

Now that being said get off my fucking back, I've been a lifty, I've been a dishwasher, I've been a valet driver, I've done tons of shit jobs in my life, and when I did work for NS it was for pennies dude. I left the industry because I could make more money, I don't work for NS anymore and I am out of the ski industry.

People who came correct, people who have a remote work job, people who are willing to live dirt poor, people who can only make it work for a season...? That being said, affordable housing is a huge problem in all ski towns, I live in a ski town, I've seen tons of people get kicked out of rentals so people can rent it out nightly, everyone I know that owns a house moves to SLC or heber valley to get something affordable.

Ski towns aren't affordable, I agree with you and others that Vail needs to do a better job at providing housing and a livable wage. But everyone who does these jobs chooses to do them, nobody is forcing people to move to ski towns and live in debt. This is going to turn into a huge issue soon, covid has accelerated it, but resorts will have a tough time hiring low paying positions without increasing their pay. This will be reflected in food prices, parking, day tickets and passes... and guess what? Everyone will complain about these price increases, but hopefully these workers can make more money in the future.

Now that being said get off my fucking back, I've been a lifty, I've been a dishwasher, I've been a valet driver, I've done tons of shit jobs in my life, and when I did work for NS it was for pennies dude. I left the industry because I could make more money, I don't work for NS anymore and I am out of the ski industry.

Thing is i make myself available 40 hours a week.

And its all "temporary" with covid. But we cant act like this pandemic is a one off thing. The best scientists all over the world are saying frequent pandemics as or more severe than covid are likely this century.

We have to bet it will be temporary but odds are there will be one every few years. We are almost free of covid but the root cause is still in affect. And thats the last straw that got me to complain. We may have to live in this scenario every few years for the rest of our lives. And the thought of being left behind because its constantly "temporary" scares me.

well they should. However vail investors want their money so higher wages are just gonna up the prices for a day ticket/epic pass.

Its rare that a company going public means good news for the consumers, so support your local hills if you can.
