Switch over unnatural shoulder??

Hey everyone,

Ive been havin this issue for a while, and was hoping someone could help me out. Basically, my problem is that i find it nearly impossible to learn how to look over my oppo shoulder when skiing switch. I’m totally proficient looking over my right shoulder, I can switch carve and all that shit, but when it comes to looking over my left side i’m terrible, and it’s staring to limit what direction i can spin cause it’s just so awkward for me. Has anyone had this issue before? any input or advice would be dope!

I have this same problem too. My neck has way less mobility looking over my left shoulder than my right. One thing I do is try to ski a whole lap once a day on an easy blue run backwards, switching my head direction every turn. When I ski a whole run switch I can’t really carve my turns, it’s more of a smear/check turn but it really helps me in working on my oppo direction and the rhythm of changing which shoulder you look over. And make sure you remember to change which foot you stagger every turn too. Good luck dude

yea ski switch as much as you can and force yourself to look over your left shoulder. Start slow on greens and blues, but the more time you spend doing this, the more comfortable it will become. Your brain is just used to looking over ur right shoulder and you just have to re-train it to be comfortable the other way. Like sliding rails opp foot forward, it is easier if you learn earlier in your progression. Just remember to turn your shoulders and stagger your feet the other way

Yep, I have this problem too. Left shoulder is good. Over the right shoulder sucks. I turn my head and then everything else likes to follow. I'm still working on the right balance of getting the right width of stance, stagger, and shoulder turn. Just gotta do it more. Repitition.

i cant ski over my right shoulder so i just blender lol, shitty solution but it works on jumps, rails not so much. that being said tho dont be like me try to ski a few groomer laps each day alternating shoulders, should help ya.

go on bunny hill.
slide backwards and do continuous slow backswaps looking over each shoulder.
keep doing

Do less and less sideways until eventually you are looking over each shoulder.

Once very comfortable put a pole in the ground and ride up to it like a rail. (unnatural switch) Just imagine theres a rail there and fake slide it

I've had the same problem, I found that if I ski switch with my left foot in front of my right one, then I can turn my waist and shoulders to the left more and then I don't have to have my neck turned that far left to see behind me. Oh and by in front of I mean my left heel is closer to the bottom of the mountain than my right one.

Think back to the first time you skied switch at all, and then how much work/time you put into learning switch carves and stuff...

Now put that same time and work into learning your opp shoulder switch stance.

i was on the same boat with you. just practice and practice. then practice a bit more.
fun story kinda related to this: as a kid i was only able to do rev mutes and then when i was skiing some pipe and thought that it doesn’t look that good on the right wall. forced myself to do regular mutes that way and now i can’t do rev mutes that good cause my brain instantly goes for the regular mute.
