How good were OG Ninthwards?

Were they particularly good skis or did they sell a lot because of their brand image alone?

They were made in the Elan factory so they were solid. Their park shapes were pretty stock standard for the time, full camber, stiff, skinny. People that rode them liked them but nothing made them stand out other than their graphics and brand image. I have no clue about their big mountain or pow skis.

Yeah, makes sense.
I don't really understand why park skis at that time were all so stiff. Was buttering not really much of a thing?

I think because most park skis were 78-86 underfoot or so and skis that skinny need to be stiff to be stable. People like Corey Vanular and JF Houle have been doing butters forever, they're possible even on those stiff ass skis.

There were fat, soft park skis as well like the Line Elizabeth (115 so bigger than park skis now) as well as the ARV and Anthem which were 95 and 90. They weren't as common though, at least where I grew up skiing.

I had the ninthward MIP and they were full camber stiff and had a strange almost directional shape but with a center or close to center mount. I heard their powder skis were some of the best on the market.

I saw someone on a decently fat pair of Nithwards on my mountain today. I had a nice conversation about them with him.

did they ever clear up their beef with CVan? didn't they not pay him at all despite being promised or it being agreed upon or something? i remember other skiers and that issue years ago

I still ride a pair of 1st or 2nd gen Rory's. I have no idea how they're still skiable, but they're the best early/late/tree skis I think I've ever owned. Nothing particularly impressive about them or any of the 9th wards I've ridden, but I honestly never disliked a pair. Rory's and Comte's were tight for their incredibly cheap price.
