Going to sound really lame here but - helmets

I’m looking at all you guys on insta - Cody Laplante, Tom Wallisch, Joss Christensen, Candide, etc. etc.

I grew up as an impressionable teen in the 2000s. I ONLY threw on a helmet because I saw it on a lot of skiers and I wanted to be cool. I’m seeing a lot of skiers posting content now without helmets and I’m noticing it’s a lot more commonplace now.

I don’t care about 95% of us not wearing helmets. I think it’s not the smartest, but it’s our decision to make. What I care about is the kids coming up who are not wearing helmets and putting themselves in danger. Those kids are not talented enough or educated enough to make a decision on the matter. They see Candide do a dub backie with no helmet and think that’s real life.

Then they head out with an arsenic anywhere cap on and dome themselves trying their first unnatural slide ever. (I saw a ~10 year old kid attempt a single barrel and potato sack it yesterday. Thank for his helmet).

All I’m asking is could we please have some more helmet awareness. I’ve been skiing park for over 16 years and I’m glad park skiing (as opposed to park snowboarding) pushed helmets when I was younger. I will always wear a helmet until the day I die. I have done without, and I know I can do without, but it’s not worth the risk.

Helmets help protect you against cuts and piercing or glancing blows on rails or rocks etc - but not concussion - which happens inside your skull due to impact of brain on bone, caused by the rapid deceleration of your head. Just sayin.

eheathThis so much, people don't seem to understand a helmet does almost nothing to protect your brain from slamming into your skull, a helmet can absorb a little bit of the blow (mips is another discussion) but if you want to prevent a concussion, wear a mouth guard.


mouth guards do a massive difference but from previous experience helmets actually do prevent a lot of further damage. wont go into details but they do save lives.

I don't think anyone is arguing they don't save lives, but they don't prevent concussions, thats the only point I ever brought up. Its pretty obvious the other benefits of a helmet and people should wear helmets, but nobody has ever said wearing a helmet isn't more safe so we don't really need to argue that.

What OP is asking for, in my opinion, is for parents to be more attentive to their children. We shouldn't be putting the onus on the people we idolize. They didn't chose that position and (most of the time)haven't asked anyone to follow them along it. When it comes to safety of the youth I believe the responsibility falls on the parents/guardians.

while i agree with this and also haven't worn a helmet in ~20 years of park skiing, childhood idols have an exorbitant amount of influence on kids. kids have tom wallisch posters on their walls, not posters of their moms and dads. sure these idols didn't choose that position and haven't asked anyone to follow but they do end up having immeasurable influence. i'm in a weird spot because i don't think the idols should have to endure the burden of promoting responsibility, but i also don't think it's 100% on the parents either. my parents implored me not to drink booze and smoke weed but i did as soon as i could. my parents weren't there to stop me from doing that and parents (most of the time) aren't there on the hill to enforce helmet use. I suppose at the end of the day it does fall on parents, but parents also need to be aware of the magnitude of influence that their children's idols have

I mean like to a degree it’s not our problem. I’m just saying using up resources like ski patrol and potentially a hospital bed for an MRI because of “steeze” does affect others. Just saying. And for sure there are people who roast helmet wearers so it does go both ways especially in a terrain park.

I've never once heard someone get shit talked about them for wearing one. The people saying that tHeY'Re jUsT dOiNg iT tO lOOk CooL seriously come across as insecure and need to get over it. Some people just don't want to wear helmets and it's their choice. If you perceive them as trying to be cool then that's your problem. When I don't feel like wearing one it's because I feel steezier without one. I feel good cause I look good and I ski good cause I feel good. When I'm trying something high consequence and I want to get a gopro shot I'll throw one on but it's my choice and if you're a grown adult then it's your choice too. If kids don't wear helmets and get hurt then it's on the parents and noone else. These threads are seriously annoying and aren't going to change anyone's mind. Everyone already knows about helmets and what they do. The secrets out guys so maybe give it a rest?

This is misleading. Of corse helmets cannot completely prevent concussions but they significantly reduce the risk and severity of concussions and other TBIs.

Look dude, I'm not trying to argue, wearing a helmet is more safe, but I think its misleading to say a helmet prevents a concussion, because it doesn't, it can help slightly, but you can tip over and fall to the ground, not moving, hit your head on snow with a helmet on and get a concussion.

There are so many variables for each incident and I believe you are safer wearing a helmet, but giving people some confidence that they are "significantly reducing the risk" of a concussion is a bad idea IMO.

Alright man, lets definitely encourage helmet brands to push "helmets significantly reduce head injuries" oh wait they would get sued immediately when someone got a concussion wearing their helmet.

I don't think you understand the point I'm trying to make, but go ahead and toss those insults my way.

Yeah I think wearing a helmet is a good choice and I don't think anyone is arguing its not, people keep misconstruing what I say as anti-helmet when I'm simply keeping a realistic view on helmets.

Right. A helmet is not like, a seat belt, which legitimately save tons of people from dying. I am a fan and I wear my helmet but like, realistically if I had to choose between everyone wearing a helmet and everyone getting FREAKING SNOW TIRES, I would choose the latter.

Okay, let's take your first point to its logical conclusion. Anyone who doesn't use knee pads, elbow pads, or wrist pads and suffers a joint injury is also using up too many resources. Anyone who rides a motorcycle and gets in an accident is taking up too many resources because they weren't in a car wearing a seatbelt. Anyone who does literally anything is using up resources. If the point of living is "not using up resources" then no one should ever do anything and that seems pretty silly to me. Second, I've never seen anyone make fun of someone for a helmet so I guess it's my anecdotal experiences against yours. If we want something quantifiable then let's just look at the number of threads in ski gabber complaining about people not wearing helmets vs the number complaining about people wearing helmets. I've seen like 10 threads in the past few months telling people they need to wear helmets and have never seen a single one saying that people shouldn't.

As a 16 year old here who I guess fits into this impressionable teen category i second this. Teaching kids to wear helmets from the start and letting them grow to not wear them imo is the standard. Make it cool to wear helmets. Too many skiers each year pay the price of looking cool by folding themselves like a fortune cookie when they knock their head on a rail/tree and experience brain damage because of lack of a helmet. As a teenager I do my fair share of stupid shit and stuff I wish I could take back but I’m blessed to say my parents require I wear a helmet and I would even if I didn’t have to.

This doesn’t mean we have to be doing some corny shit like helmet ads like anti smoking ads you see on tv/YouTube. Instead, pros and good skiers, if you see some amateur young guys on the hill trying new stuff, please recommend they wear a helmet. At the end of the day the choice is theirs but you have a voice as a good skier to leave your own impression on young guys like me. The last think we all want to see is more severe concussions and lasting TBIs for young kids that could potentially be life changing. Thank you for listening to my rant and please wear a helmet.

Edit: One last thing I just thought of. As more resorts are beginning to close parks citing lack of funding or expensive insurance costs, what do you think park riders not wearing helmets and getting into accidents does to the cost of insurance especially for smaller private local hills?

Yes. You can count them, put them in an excel spreadsheet and make a graph. So it's pretty much the opposite of an anecdote. It's actual data. And you will find that the data supports what I am saying.

Completely agree but I will say, lots of kids don’t ski park with their parents and all it takes is that little bit of “rebel against my parents” hormone action to get them to unclip it and leave it in their bag, locker, or car. The thing that probably makes me most angry in skiing those is watching parents taking their kids skiing for the first time and all I see is beanie, no helmet. I don’t want to bear the guilt of your kid somehow crashing into me or sitting under a jump and I dome rock him and leave him unconscious because his/her parents don’t put them in a helmet.

In short yes I agree parents are absolutely the first and most important line of defense when it comes to putting their kids into helmets but just like teens smoke, drink, and do other stupid shit they do that they think is cool, having pros and riders wear or recommend helmets I think would be a great shift for the industry.

Back in 2015, I took a hit to the head that almost killed me. The doctors drugged me into a coma for a week and a half while they drilled holes in my skull to drain all the blood. The docs say I would absolutely be dead if I hadn't been wearing my helmet. It was a freak accident with multiple responsible parties, including myself. the point is, you never know when you're going to need to protect your head while skiing. skiing is cool unless you die

I saw my best buddy torpido a tree head first at full speed. Walked out of the hospital the next morning with a bad concussion and a cut lip and a torn jaw muscle. I bought a new helmet after witnessing that.

A lot of great responses, a lot of shit responses. Athletes are 100% paid to represent brands and influence trends among skiers. I find it very silly that some people are trying to say that they are not responsible. Okay... then why are they paid? Why would ANY athlete be paid?

If they “don’t want the onus”, I know plenty of great skiers who are broke who would gladly wear helmets and take their place. In fact, why don’t these pros just work as broke shop techs? Then there’s no obligation to wear a helmet.

I’m using hyperbole, but it’s ridiculous to act like these pros (and their contracts) don’t have an effect on kids.


And let me make it clear: this is not an attack on pros. You guys put out some insane shit that I love. Just a simple plea for more helmet awareness from you guys. Much love.

This is a stupid debate that honestly shouldn't be a debate but here it goes.
The onus should be on both parents and athletes. Pretty much anyone with influence that could prevent a preventable injury for the sake of the sport if not the health of individuals. Pros willingly took on the position of influence when they accepted their first sponsorship. Or are you telling me that Saga and other brands don't sponsor athletes in the hopes of them influencing purchasing decisions?

If you could alter someone's perspective in a positive way (not a selfish one) would you do it? We as a society have responsibilities whether we like it or not we can't just let certain things be. Perhaps a little far reaching of a point for the argument of wearing a helmet while skiing but influence and persuasion are real and you experience it every day without notice.

People should be able to do what they want. The helmet culture chsnged a bunch anyway. Even going back to work in ny at a night skiing mtn with a bunch of kids i saw mostly helmets. Like 95% percent. Thatbwas a huge change from working there even 4 years plus before.

It's super common so theres no reason to not where one to be cool etc. If you've been skiing for most of your life without one do whatever. It's not on me.

Helmets are worth wearing imo as somebody whis broken a couple and has too bad head injuries plus a fuck ton of concussions.

At the end of the day do whatever, just dont do it for stupid reasons. If you don't wear one don't wear one, but if it's just for looks or to be cool thats some whack shit imo.

I think one thing that gets people butt-hurt (and why we see these threads every week), is that skiing seems to have really pushed the helmet agenda over other sports or other safety gear. I get it and I am supportive of wearing a helmet and I always do, but fundamentally it does feel a bit out of place.

I have played a bunch of sports, probably spent as much time playing soccer as skiing and as far as I can tell soccer is WAY more dangerous for head injuries than skiing, unless you ski like a moron. The number of elbows, head butts, and times I have fallen backwards on my head and blacked out in soccer is order of magnitudes higher than skiing. Any college soccer team regularly has some of the team out with a concussion.

I think the outcome is good. Helmets > no helmets. But I do think it became mainstream because the target audience (wealthy people afraid of getting hurt who don't know what they are doing) are very easily pushed into helmet culture and the inconvenience is low (its cold outside, helmet doesn't get in the way). Adding real helmets to soccer or even basketball, for example, just doesn't work with the game and most people who play (across the world) probably can't afford a helmet to begin with.

This is so god damn stupid it's actually funny. You do understand that it isn't the sponsors that make a skier pro right? If a sponsor dropped an athlete for not wearing a helmet then that athlete could just find another sponsor. Most pro skiers pay all their expenses out of their own pockets anyway. It's not a corporate job lmao

I get it and I am supportive of wearing a helmet and I always do, but fundamentally it does feel a bit out of place.

I have played a bunch of sports, probably spent as much time playing soccer as skiing and as far as I can tell soccer is WAY more dangerous for head injuries than skiing, unless you ski like a moron. The number of elbows, head butts, and times I have fallen backwards on my head and blacked out in soccer is order of magnitudes higher than skiing. Any college soccer team regularly has some of the team out with a concussion.

I think the outcome is good. Helmets > no helmets. But I do think it became mainstream because the target audience (wealthy people afraid of getting hurt who don't know what they are doing) are very easily pushed into helmet culture and the inconvenience is low (its cold outside, helmet doesn't get in the way). Adding real helmets to soccer or even basketball, for example, just doesn't work with the game and most people who play (across the world) probably can't afford a helmet to begin with.


Yeah. I haven't watched refs shovel up the blood from somebody bleeding out on a soccer field though. Most times skiing goes fine, but when it doesnt it doesn't. It's amazing how slow you can be going on mellow terrain and it be a fatality.

Trying to say a ski crash is equal to playing basketball and soccer is fucking stupid imo. Yes head injuries occur in soccer. Fuck i played both those sports, but clipping a tree or a rock is a totally different game.

And who the fuck is pushing anything. You don't want to wear a helmet? Dont. But don't make up ridiculous apologies about sports.

That is fair. Other sports may have a higher (or similar w/e) concussion rate but lower fatality / serious trauma rate (still happens, though, plenty of people have died from contract head injuries in plenty of other sports). Less metal / hard objects and high speeds to deal with I guess is the major point.

That being said, I would give up my helmet in exchange for like, everyone not driving like a fucking idiot on i70 / all the passes and getting proper tires. Honestly feels like a game of roulette sometimes.

Unfortunately people are incapable of driving vehicles. Corona hits and everyone learns to make bread, play the guitar, salsa dance. People have been driving for years and are seemingly clueless..

Mtn deaths stay under the radar decently or at least used to but shit happens. Not that often for how many people are out but damn there's some fucked shit.

I think in general we're realizing the dangers of sports and head injuries. Its not all smelling salts, a halftime speech, and get back in there!

Also as far as the driving fun I almost hit a lady on 70 bu wolcott doing 65 or so in a snowstorm in the dsrk with 0 loghts. Not daytime runners nothing. Only saw her because she braked. Was driving home to eagle. Beeeped, flashed lights, waved, eventuslly flupped her off and drove away. She prolly got home and told her husband about the asshole that flipped her off for no reason at all on the highway. People are fucked.
