How often do lifties actually get to ski?

If you absolutely need the work obviously do it but I wouldn’t recommend it if you’re really looking to ski a lot & love it. I worked one full time year as a lifty & I got so damn sick of missing good days and seeing everyone else have all the fun. I also usually just went home after my shift rather than ski because they’re usually long & tiring. It’s a great way to meet people though & integrate into a mountain’s culture. Just don’t expect it to make you love skiing more .... it did the opposite for myself.

all depends on what the crew/coworker setup is like, what lift you're working, and how experienced and "down to lap" everybody is honestly, and the resort type and vibe. Definitely going to be skiing your ass off at like a place like Alta or something.

I got to work one of my favorite lifts i used to ski growing up at PC for a season with some friends and it was one of the most fun seasons i can recall. Everybody loved to ski/snowboard, we made breakfasts and lunches for everyone, and guaranteed everybody was taking laps on the clock via a good system we worked out lol. Was really fun. Definitely not the case anymore at some of thse Vail resorts and i suggest working somewhere better with cooler terrain and some better vibes. But it is what it is. Still got tons of friends who worked their way up in lift ops or are mechanics and still love it.

oh and yeah make sure to hook up patrol with free breakfast sammiches/lunch if you do make it for the crew as well as the bosses and mechanics. Especially patrol lol they let us have first dibs on some stuff after they did control work and it was not yet open to the public

JT9DJust got laid off now I'm lookin for jobs, my local northeast mountain is looking for a full time lift operator (taking a gap year before college so I hope they dont mean skiing and mountain biking lift). Problem is, I fucking love skiing and I just need to know if I'll have enough time during the week to actually ski

night ops are the way to go also. work like 4-6 hours maybe a few nights a week. the paycheck is shit but a free pass for minimal work is pretty chill too

I work nites usually and I get to ski a fair amount, when I get a couple days off I trek up north to get Lake effect freshies, its not a bad setup....

it really is painful though on pow days being trapped at work

Teaching isn't a bad alternative. Some places lessons start at 10, so you can get morning freshies. And you're on snow, but it sucks when you get the mega beginners.

Also I've heard parking lot and ticket office isn't bad.

being a lifty is awesome because some nights you get to leave early and just shred. im supervisor now so i cant really do that anymore, but i only work weekends 2-10 so i still got plenty of shred time
