What are the biggest scams in skiing? I'll start:
- lodge food
- vail timeshares
- the price of poles

DominatorJacquesNice. Typing is a good skill. Didn't need it as much when I was in school. I am slow as hunt and peck! My skills suck.
My machine can do, but I shut off as much of that as I can.
theabortionatorYeah I should probably have gotten a job with it but I never felt like it. It can be rough because I'll slam out a billion word response without realizing it and then look at it and think oops, after I post it.
But yeah wasn't trying to throw a giant wall of text at you. I take parks too seriously and that mtn is still a bit of a sore spot for me. I'll get over it in another 5 or 10 years lol. Hope your season is off to a good start.
SofaKingSickpersonally I think you misinterpreted what he said but I enjoyed the vignette into the builder'a world, and that is a fiiiiire setup
theabortionatorOne of the nights I was working on it at like 1 am. It was raining on me a little and my bluetooth speaker had died. Had posted some pics of the progress to get people hyped for the next day and some kid bitched that there were too many rails or something. I was like fuck this I'm out lol and rolled down the mountain and left for the night to catch a few hours of sleep before coming back in the next day for the comp.
I think something about that mountain in general and that setup has me still a little salty. Also I hope people know a lot of times a mega text wall from me doesn't mean I'm mad or yelling. Usually I'm just thinking a bunch and typing too fast.
SofaKingSicki've never seen one that's literally half price, though your example is prob a higher percentage of the full day price than i usually see. however damn those are amazing prices period! might be a tiny mtn but still
9try$600 for 80 of meters vert
SendyMcSendyfacechicopee or glen lmao?
BenFrostIdk if anyone knows this mountain but its about a 1000' vertical drop. Gotta be one of the most expensive mountains for its size. They get a lot of traffic from NYC and long island area so they can afford to gouge tf out of prices since a lot of those fools dont know better.
The.FishHow has nobody said mounting skis? My shop has raised the price from $40 to $75 to get some holes drilled. On top of that, it usually takes over a month for my skis to get done. I'm going to use my engineering degree and design my own affordable ski jig because it is getting ridiculous. Even if you support the local shop and buy from them, the wait time is a huge problem.
FruitBootProWait time is a thing because popular shops get super backed up. I work at a shop right now that takes over a week to finish maintenance (base refinish, binding install, binding adjustment/torque test, filling core shots) on skis because of how backed up we are. Last weekend we literally had an overflow of skis in the back and had to put them on the boot shelves because there was no more space on the racks. This being said, we are one of the few ski shops out there that are highly unlikely to fuck up your mount, our ski mechanic is really savvy and takes his job really seriously.
Most ski shops aren't like this though and having to wait over a fucking MONTH to get your skis mounted is egregious.

CaseyHas anyone mentioned the NS searchbar??? Whatever you guys paid for that, I hope it wasn’t much.
elm.I made a 3D printed ski jig a month ago for about $15, and am working on my second model. Let me know if you have any suggestions on the first.[/url]

PoikenzYou'd save more time and money just using a paper template as you can skip the whole design/ manufacture part along with not having to make a new jig every time you get bindings with a different mounting pattern.

SofaKingSickno need to waste time/money reinventing the wheel, right? for anyone reading this, the way to search this site is to google site:newschoolers.com + your search terms. works super well
The.FishThat was in October too. I dropped the skis and boots off on October 12 and picked them up November 14th. I live in Columbus, OH so it isn't like we are even super into skiing around here. However, that means there aren't many ski shops. I did get a pretty insane deal on the skis, so I didn't complain. (Tom wallisch pro, attack 13, poles, mount, and stone grind tune for $550).

The.FishI plan on making a universal system where you just drop in a new 3d printed plate for a different binding pattern. That only takes about 5 minutes of design and a few hours of print time every time you switch bindings. Plus its way more fun for engineers :)
PoikenzSo a non- $300 jigarex? Sorry if that ruins the fun.
719Grip walk
DominatorJacquesYea, videos from Mt's about skiing powder.
The guys get early ups, so they get it virgin to do the videos. That's not reality.
Once you get there, you ride down with a thousand folks and it's tracked out in 30 minutes.
That's after waiting in a lift line for a zillion hours to get first ups.
DummyBearsStowe lift tickets are 129$
dant02I know my local hill just has a rack of poles for the renters that they are supposed to return at the end of the day. Literally hundreds of pairs and any length you could possibly want. Everyone I know just snags poles off the rental rack whenever they are in need.
SofaKingSickAgreed but it gets worse, Stratton has tickets for $130+ lmao
animatorGotta disagree, after owning a boot with it it makes walking so much easier
719Although I agree your Apres Life may have been gainfully impacted, think about what it did to consumers. Given that the ski industry is driven by capitalism all the bindings had to be changed to be ISO Grip Walk compatible. what did this do? Forced everyone who bought grip walk to upgrade their bindings, fueling cash flow to an upgrade that does absolutely nothing for on-hill performance. Glad the village walkabouts are performing at their optimal level tho.
JpurdThis is nuts. I can ski A-basin for like 80 bucks and I guarantee you that's a better experience. But I get it. With the amount of snow these east coast mtns need to pump out.
TnskiGoggles, just plastic like a water bottle for 200$ , sure there's some rnd costs like skiing trying different lenses on,, more like rnr than rnd.
ericformanSkiing in the northeast used to be even more wildly expensive for what you got relative to the west. Some combination of availability and wealth I guess. Pretty sure back in like 2015 or whatever a season pass to like Stowe or something was completely unaffordable - something like 2K for an adult. Even the tiny hills in CT were more expensive than an abasin season pass. There was always a good deal for like u24 but I remember thinking like f...what am I gonna do when I am 30.
fonduehaterArcteryx.
skiguy04First post win
broken_skier0Top end alpine bindings to people who don't need them. 99% of skiers should be setting their DIN to 13 or less.
Private lessons at the mega resorts unless you can split the costs with someone else. Vail charges $1049/day for a private lesson and this doesn't include a lift ticket. If you can afford to drop $1200 for a day of skiing, why wouldn't you go cat or heli skiing instead?
