Thinking about writing about ski shops and how unacceptable it is that they mess up ski mounts so much. Has this happened to you? If so, how did they mess up, and how did they go about making their mistake right with you? And have you noticed a difference between local ski shops and big box stores?

What I'm saying is that in a little over 10 years of business, we have had zero issues and Vermont calibrators are still a 100% legal from of ski binding testing (yes they still sell them even today). So why would I change what works and is legal to make you feel warm and fuzzy inside? That is where you decide whether or not you give your business to us, and as an adult you are welcome to do so.

it aint about me bein warm and fuzzy or legal
its about using accurate modern technology to cut labor costs and keep a more professional record of it
which pays fer itself in the long run
vrs. an overpriced torque wrench on a stick that any competent tech can make read whatever he wants and is sadly outdated
they do make great kegerator barley pop dispensers though

REI mounted my Poachers at +6 from center, this put the toe piece comically forward on the ski. I believe the tech marked where the midsole should have been, and then mounted the heelpiece there. To this day I cannot imagine how the tech finished the mount and didn't notice the bindings were on the front 3rd of the ski.
REI made it right, they remounted the skis (correctly), comp'd me for the phantom treatment I had purchased as well as the mount, and credited me for the purchase price of the planks.
Lots of heartache and frustration but they were ultimately quick to accept fault, given that the notes/instructions of my requested mounting point were very clear.
So in 2015 i went to Slopestyle in Breck and got boots and a mount. When filling out the ski ability chart I put a type 2 skier. I figured all sorts of shredders came through there and i didnt wanna seem like a cocky ass hole and I had no fuckin clue that it had to do with your din setting lol. So o get them back and i go to get an EpicMix photo. I wanted to do a nose block to show off the bases of my J Skis x Inspired skis. Double ejected straight to my face haha heres the pic
yeah i work there now and the dude that mounted mine didn’t mount it center at all but turns out he’s just like a really old dude that thinks center mount is morally wrong or something
Heres my story of an incompetent ski tech with a drill..
About 5 years ago i went to this small independently owned ski shop and got my first pair of twin tips. I told the tech to mount them at recommended… he gives me back the skis, i take them home and i realize that one ski had the binding mounted about 2 inches further back that the binding on the other ski. I took it back and he gave me a new ski which was nice
Anyway, i take them out to the mountain, and my left ski kept falling off. When i got home i looked at my boots, and the dude at the ski shop sent me home with two different boots, each having a different bsl.
needless to say, this shop was an overall bad experience and i never plan to go there again

My ski would always pop off of my left foot. No matter which ski i put on my left foot it would always pop off so i figured my problem had to be with my boot so i looked at my boots and saw my left boot was like 5mm shorter than my right boot
Buckmans is a great store if you want to experience a pretty bad shop. Not only boot fitted me 3 sizes over but mounted my pivots incorrectly then tried their hardest to convince me that the toepiece wiggling left and right was how it should be and the heel piece barely engaging was also correct.

My most recent ski purchase this year, mount was fine (I used masking tape to make sure) but they didn't set my din, thankfully I noticed before I ejected and was able to find a screw driver at the top of the lift. Funny thing is this was just after going to a ladies ski shop tech talk where they were adamant about never touching your own bindings because "only a trained professional" ever should. I also had a couple friends buy skis recently and the shops failed to set the forward pressure... One of my friends almost gave up skiing because she had too much trauma from constantly pre-releasing even though shop techs told her everything was set fine (it wasn't). So yeah, if you want something done right do it yourself, learn to set your din and forward pressure, for most bindings it's really not difficult, and most shops will teach you how to do it for free if you ask.

Haha honestly idek how i didnt notice they were 2 different boots when i bought them. They were the same model and everything, just one was 29.5 and the other was 29.0

Heel piece ripped out skiing some tiny moguls because the shop overlapped the holes after I specifically told them to mount it wherever they need to forward or back of the recommended line to make it work.
Just picked up my B-dogs after a mount at the shop this week. Gap on one toe piece between ski and plastic about a ID card in thickness, movement in the toe piece if i move it with my hand.
Also they mounted 0.5cms in front of true center, so minor but annoying considering the toe piece.
Headed back to the shop to get it tightened up tomorrow, i guess i can survive the 5mm.
Bended_ToenailI know a guy who used to work at my shop that was stoned and mounted a pivot toepiece backward on one ski and mounted the entire other ski (Volkl Mantra) at +13. He was "encouraged to quit".
At the bigger shops in my town I've heard that they mostly just mount wherever they think is best for the ski, without taking into consideration the skiers preference.
My friend asked for a direct center mount on a pair of skis that were symmetrical and the shop gave them to him -7
I stopped going to shops when I started tele skiing. Most telemark bindings now come with instructions on how to properly mount them yourself. With no din to worry about there’s really no purpose in taking them to a shop, they can hardly mount alpine bindings properly.
