Winter Park's "Eskimo Express" is now "Explorer Express"

Last summer, we examined the names of our trails and lifts, and recognized that the name “Eskimo” is considered derogatory and offensive by many. Through research we learned people in many parts of the Arctic consider Eskimo a derogatory term because it was widely used by racist, non-native colonizers. Many people also thought it meant eater of raw meat, which connoted barbarism and violence. Brands with longer histories than Winter Park’s have also decided to abandon the term. The iconic Eskimo Pie dropped the name in 2020, and the Edmonton Canadian football team announced it would no longer use the name as well.

Winter Park is a place for all people to Venture Out, to escape and retreat, to transform and trailblaze. Winter Park is an inclusive place and that’s why we moved to change the name of the Eskimo Express Lift to the Explorer Express Lift. The name “Explorer” more accurately represents our resort, our brand, our team, and our guests.

What about all them nasty prospectors that came out west and raped the land.
Can't have the Prospector lift triggering the snowflakes either.

The Iron Horse was the carbon belching bringer of the white man...gotta go
Challenger, a Union Pacific steam locomotive, ginormous, carbon footprint
the size of a Wyoming coal field...outta here.
Galloping Goose? Yup, another one of them fossil fuel burning despoilers of
the pristine west.

And Pony Express...any idea how hard they rode them ponies? I bet PETA
has something to say about that.

Look man I question how far PC and cancel culture have gone but getting super worked up over the name of a chairlift is pretty stupid to hill to die on. Let it go, its not like they are rebranding Mary Jane.

I think the outrage about these kinds of things is annoying, but I don't really give a shit that it's changed. I don't think the resort's decision is problematic. The lift is still the lift, who cares what mouth sounds we use to identify it with.

Frontier prostitutes are more hip than ever dude, if anything they should rename all the lifts after local sex workers. There was never an appreciable population of indigenous arctic dwellers in Winter Park (as far as I know) so it makes way more sense to bestow the names of women of the night on all the chair lifts.

There exists a scholarly consensus that the word Eskimo etymologically derives from the Innu-aimun (Montagnais) word ayas̆kimew meaning "a person who laces a snowshoe" (an origin proposed by Ives Goddard at the Smithsonian Institution),[27] is related to husky (a breed of dog), and does not have pejorative meaning in origin.[2][28][29][27] (The word assime·w means "she laces a snowshoe" in Innu, and Innu language speakers refer to the neighbouring Mi'kmaq people using words that sound like eskimo.[30][31])

it used to be that way here until they painted all the chairs silver. usually people, including myself, refer to the lifts as “the one over there”, “the one in the middle”, and “ the one by the park”

and yeah for what its worth, the fact that there are people involved in skiing that are bothered by "muh PC culture" and changing the names of charilifts definitely means you probably arent too fond of POC's either.

World War II. Brakeperson seems appropriate.

We have the "Dark Territory" which refers to unsignaled railroad tracks that
requires specific clearance to operate on. (kudos to whoever came up with
such an appropriate name) However, I'm sure we can come up with some
way that name offends someone.

Well, I guess "Explorer" is OK. I'll just think about explorers like Columbus,
Cortés, Lewis & Clark and any number of other white male oppressors I can

Think about all the pioneers that followed Lewis & Clark that displaced the
indigenous people in North America. The Pioneer lift will have to go.

I think all those downvotes missed the irony here. I wonder if there is some way we can just cancel the Winter Park name, too? There's got be some reason its racist.
