Edward Snowden: Patriot or Traitor

Finally watched this movie Snowden. I know the jist of the story but put off the movie because as expected it glorifies him. So my question I pose nearly a decade later, is he a traitor?

He severely crippled our reaches and potential for power as a country. At the basic core value of any country, it is to be the best. He risked that on the basis of privacy ethics. Now we are in an era of homegrown terrorism which these surveillance programs would be perfectly positioned to defend against. Also want to point out he's still living in Russia.

BTW we all know the government didn't change anything. They are still spying on us.

Charlie_KellyPatriot. He knew the consequences of his actions and did it anyway. The Patriot Act was/is the biggest violation of our privacy in history.

The 'Patriot Act' was signed after two democratic congressmen were sent sophisticated Anthrax spores in the mail by "scary muslims" (it wasn't) who hated our "freedoms" so much that they had to kill the two democratic congressmen that refused to sign the Patriot Act.

Or, it was the very people who wrote the Patriot Act that sent the Anthrax.

From that time on, someone proved to someone else, not to mess with anything they do or they will literally kill you.

r00kieThe difference between corps and government is accountability. There are regulations and restrictions on businesses. If they go against those it can be handled in court and negative publicity is certainly not going to keep money coming in. The government doesn't have much. They would be enforcing their own rules on themselves which is no form of accountability. This is why whistleblowers such as Snowden are so important.


LOL the Sackler family/Purdue Pharma admitted to breaking multiple laws to get as many people addicted to opioids as possible, actions which has lead to hundreds of thousands of deaths. Zero criminal charges.

But please keep telling me how corporations are held accountable.

Its far from perfect but at least theres some resemblence of a system. If a company takes you're infornation in a way outside of the terms and agreements you consented to, you can take them to court and take your business away from them. If the government does it sure you can go to court, but thats asking the defendant to punish themselves, which is no form of accountability. Without Snowden we may not have even known about government surveillance on person interactions. Whistleblowers help hold the government accountable in a system with little accountability otherwise.

The establishment loves to rule by fear and throws around the traitor label so easily. When they were passing the patriot act, those who raised concerns about government intrusion into the private lives of US citizens were labeled traitors by AG John Ashcroft.
When you look at all the arrows in Snowden's back and who has been doing the shooting its a good indication Snowden is on the right side. Too many people equate boot licking with patriotism. Wrapping oneself in the flag is easy. Putting yourself at risk to expose government corruption not so much.
