Rewinch - is the winch future electric?

So I just picked up this new electric winch called the Rewinch, primarily for wakeboarding on my pond during the summer but thought, hell I'm sure thisll work for skiing too. Thing looks pretty dam cool and very very portable whichll be so nice for urban skiing. Never seen anyone use an electric winch before, should be interesting. Just hope the batteries don't die quickly in cold weather





Wonder if more companies are gonna start making electric winches or if gas-powered will remain more reasonable

I feel like the battery on that thing is gonna die after 10 pulls in -10F weather, otherwise I think an electric winch is a good idea.

lithium batteries of today will have 0 trouble pulling that load.

if you need there exists battery pack heaters, but I dont think you would need it, the load isnt that big. Also when loading a battery, it will generate heat itself, so it would just generate more and more umph.

For a chill spot this could be nice. But if you are going to be battling a trick for 3-6hrs or more I wouldn’t trust the battery to not die.

Yeah Im a lil worried bout the battery life in really cold weather, which I will encounter living in NH, but I didn't actually purchase the batteries are supposed to go with it. After exchanging some emails with the owner (super nice and helpful dude btw), I figured out I could just buy 4 car batteries and wire them up to it. Hopefully provide a longer life and is a cheaper alternative I think

Altho using car batteries is going to take away from the portability somewhat but still easier to move around than ur average gas-powered winch

So for wakeboarding, are you just running an extension cord? Some spots might have a power outlet nearby, I have definitely used a buildings outlet to plug in lights before.

Yeah so the thing is I couldn't figure out a way to power it directly, like from an outlet or something, so instead imma set up the four car batteries down by my pond, then have those connected to some power source up to my house so I won't ever have to worry about them dying and having to charge them. Altho obviously this won't be possible when I bring it other places

This is super easy to calculate

4 car batteries? meeeeh dont do it. You will only get to use about half the watthours of a car battery, and running it down will decrease it even further.

Get a meter that logs amps, volts and mah used per pull, this way you can calculate the watthours needed, also using lithium, in some sort of form will enable to to use 80% of a battery.

You need an RC nerd, and this is just minutes of calculations, a 3s or 4s lipo or 4s lifepo4 will weight 1/4 to 1/8th of the car batteries, and yield much more umph on same runtime/number of pulls.



How does it power when used from land? can you see specs on regulator and unit?

checked their site, they literally have all the info on there, product seems supercool!

they use regular 6s lipo and seems to be integrated into a 12s2p meaning 4,2*12 = 50.4V fully charged 4 car batteries fully charged = is 12.7*4 = 50,8V, hence why they say you can use 4 regular car batteries.

they say you can get 20-30 pulls out of 8000mah , and you get to use say 80% out of the 8000mah or 8ah, used 6.4ah ish and lets use nominal voltage 3.7 for the math which means about 280 ish watthours.


car batteries will be wayyyyyyyyyyy heavy and have less power. When we done similar projects to save $$ we would just have a car running and charge the lipos from that, you will be enable to run it nonstop by having a car chargeing the other set, or using a 110V source.

Depending on how much it pulls, and if you have issues, you can use a $10 LIPO warmer bag with a $10 lipo to keep it warm and give you full power.

Deep cycle 12v batteries run like $85 to $100 a piece, that coupled with the cost of they're $85 adapter is already more expensive than the batteries they're selling. We run deep cycle walmart batteries on our sprayer trucks to power the electric pumps in the summer and only get about 70-80 charges out of them before they degrade too much to really be useful. And were only cycling those batteries in 50-95° temps. That's going to be way less than a decent lithium battery is going to give you. On top of that they weigh like 35-40lbs each. I would just go ahead and cop the batteries they offer they'll last longer and be cheaper long term for sure. As for plugging it to the wall, you can definitely find or have built a 50v DC power supply to run it off an outlet provided the load isn't too high

Im thinking a wakeboard pull is also way longer than most urban and ski pulls in general.

Well for one, the winch needs 50v to start the pull and will decrease to about 30v to maintain the pull, so the car batteries work perfectly there. Also, I have a friend who has a deep cycle charger he said he'd give me. So I was planning on having the batteries connected to the charger pretty much all the time, thus they would never really die. It would only draw power from the batteries on startup, then would essentially be powered by the charger alone.

Obviously, this is not a portable option, but I planned all this when I was only thinking about my wakeboarding setup, which I will never be moving around once set up. If I do wanna use this for urban skiing (which I do just haven't figured it out yet), I probably will have to get the battery pack they offer.

And they actually offer two different capacity battery packs; one is 4000mAh and the other is 10000mAh, which is dope as hell, but will set you back $285 or $750 (respectively). I've already spent a pretty penny on it, so might have to hold out for that for a lil while.

But thank all of you guys so much for your input. I really am not all the savvy with this type of shit and really appreciate the advice. Definitely gonna have to keep looking into it

Unless that deep cycle charger is 50VDC that wont work ;) (guessing its 12)



you can do it with an RC charger actually, it will ramp up the voltage enough.



just grabbing random 6s lipos from hobbyking will be cheaper though for sure. IF you have any RC friends. they probably allready have it handy.

I can fly pretty much anything, I mostly did 3D with helis, like anything from small to 800. 3d with airplanes, some jet stuff, but I find scale boring. RC stuff died years ago though, nobody seems to do it anymore.

This landed me the position of designated drunk drone pilot when doing stuff on boats like sailing, poker runs,skiiing etc. seeing as drones theese days require 0 skill... yeah I can do it with a few beers :p

Nice! I've been flying rc stuff since I was a kid, it really is dying out. I'm more of a scale guy cause I like building shit, but did some drone racing a few years ago.

Haven't gotten to use one yet, but worth considering: they are designed for wakeboarding, and wakeboarders put WAY more drag on water than pulling a skier on snow does. I'm optimistic about the potential for the battery to get you through a hefty session even with cold impacting it.

currently bummed my rewinch didn’t have the power to pull me into the spot … got pulled @approx 3mph at full speed. must be a temperature issue … will keep updates.

*IGNORE FIRST POST REPLY !!!* Can't delete comment ... Rewinch works just fine and is quite handy. got kicked out of spots 4 times today so that's not quite the stoke we're looking for but that's the way she fuckin' goes eh? Rewinch is actually quite conducive for urban spots even though i did have some straps and zippers break on the bags they provide, and the line snapped once today but it's so long that ideally, it should live thru many linebreaks.
