So I have multiple friends who I've been trying to get to start lifting. (As in barbell lifts Bench Squat Deadlift Overhead Press Cleans etc..) because for me and everyone else I know who has done this sort of thing these lifts (with GOOD FORM being key, not talking ego lifting) are best for building good core strength and actually preventing back pain because a strong core and posterior chain support the spine. (keep in mind muscle soreness and back pain are two very different things).
Those who I have been lifting with for a while and those who I know started lifting recently (esp. during corona) have all gotten addicted to it. There is a group that just refuses to even give it a try though, citing back pain. The common denominator of this group is that they all go to a chiropractor. The chiropractor has them convinced that they are just too frail to lift or they can't because "something is out of alignment." Then I ask if they've ever gone to a real doctor about it and they say no. I try to explain that yea, sitting in a chair all day with bad posture is gonna give you back pain and the only way to stop that is to build a strong posterior chain, and if it's more serious than that they should go see a real doctor about it. (Would be less $ than seeing a chiropractor every week or whatever) It's not like they're crippled or anything. Their chiropractors have them convinced that if they try to do anything they'll snap their spine and the only solution is to never use their lower back muscles and keep coming in for "corrections". So they continue to have back pain because of inactivity, bad posture, and zero posterior chain or core strength.
Look, I've had bad back tweaks before, one from a car accident. I rested it, and was back to deadlifting and squatting in a week. The second from football where I got checked out by the team trainer to make sure I didn't actually damage my spine, was back in a couple weeks. Third one from eating shit skiing. Went to the actual doctor, got checked out, and was good to go in a couple weeks again.
I don't mean to just shit on all chiropractors, I'm sure it helps some people with real back issues and no other solutions. But when it's people I know who have been just fine, start going to a chiropractor (not always but usually at the recommendation of a mom or aunt) and all of a sudden have a "bad back" it makes me wonder what's really going on. I also have family members/friends with scoliosis and fused discs, various injuries and other back issues who never saw a chiropractor and swear that the only way to help the pain is to actually USE the supporting muscles and strengthen the back.
Thoughts?
