Switch riding

Hey!
I have a problem, my natural direction to ride switch is over the right shoulder but i spin every trick to the left side, so its hard for me to do switch tricks. I already tried to ride switch over my left shoulder for 2 seasons but it doesn't get better and its really pissing me off xD. Anyone got any tips?

That's weird as. I thought if you spin left you'd be naturally better over your left shoulder.

Can you carve both ways whilst looking over each shoulder? For example, a lot of people can only turn left whilst looking over their left shoulder. It's unnatural af but you should be able to turn right too, obviously not as clean or as sharp, but still accurate enough. Maybe practise this, it'll help strengthen your switch riding so you'll be better set for throwing tricks.

I was in the same boat spinning left and riding switch over my right shoulder. I’ve got it down now to ride switch over either shoulder, but as far as spinning tricks from switch it was easier for me to just practice hitting things switch looking over the right shoulder and spinning right. It definitely will get easier the more you practice. Plus then you’ll be throwing stuff switch unatty, which is pretty ill.

i think you're in the minority of people who are MORE comfortable spinning in the opposite direction when taking off switch vs when you're forward facing. you are special and deserve a hot chocolate beverage

probably cause of skating, not sure. But I do like a good hot chocolate bevvy.

Add me to the count of folks who naturally spin left, but are comfier skiing switch looking over the right shoulder and spinning switch to the right.

I think the biggest thing is just forcing yourself to be comfortable looking over the less comfortable shoulder by doing it until it’s chill. Then you can alternate and your switch flow looks way radder - see Eric Pollard for example.

Same goes for spinning. If you force yourself to learn spinning both ways early then you won’t have as much of a natural direction and you’ll be so much more flexible with what you can throw where.

I feel that, I look over my right shoulder naturally and spin left. I just learned to spin switch unnat which became my natural for switch spins.

Skating can make your skiing mechanics kind of wonky. I used to longboard a lot so Im used to having my left foot forward sliding rails but I spin naturally to my left. This means its actually more comfortable for me to hit rails switch because I am spinning the correct way for my natural foot to be forward.

I also spin left yet ride switch looking over my right shoulder. I can do right switch 1s, 360s and cool nollies, so it doesn't matter that I can't really ride switch looking left as well, I always turn uphilll

I guess I got lucky that I spin left and happen to ski switch looking over my left shoulder. That being said I absolutely suck at skiing switch looking over my right shoulder and I cant even do a simple switch 180 looking that way. I say if you are solid with both turns while staying looking over one shoulder you're doing good though, it's looks so much cleaner than people who have to swap the shoulder they are looking over on every turn in order to make both turns. No parks are open right now so I'm trying to put in more time right side switch skiing. It is weird that no one really mentions how learning how to ski switch is like learning to snowboard regular AND goofy, since left shoulder versus right shoulder are completely different. You are essentially learning to ski one footed for that awkward right shoulder left turn. Right shoulder right hand turn, sure, easy. Right shoulder, left hand turn, freaking black magic to try and make.

I am just curious what happens when you hit a jump switch? Like every thing is going perfectly until you clear the lip and you just don’t know what to do from there? I want a vid

When I really want to learn something new, I usually go in the park alone, headphones on, boost mode on and I spend the day practicing this thing. If you want to practice your unnatural switch, tell yourself to do 5 laps on switch exclusively, for example.

If there is a combo of two little jumps, you can practice some sw3 both ways as well. 1st jump : over left shoulder, left spin / 2nd jump over right shoulder, right spin. Again, after 5 laps, you change. After 2 days, you won't feel the difference anymore
