oldmanskiI think you are on the right track, SLC is one of the prime areas for skiing as you know. Can’t go wrong with either passes or any resort there. Are you just looking to rent a or are you going to buy a place? Renting is a challenge to find a decent, cheap, close place to the resorts but only because there are many others doing the same thing. Idaho doesn’t have much going on but maybe look into Targhee, Jackson Hole if you want to go that far. You could maybe find a rental in Driggs or Victor but again, many others are trying to do the same thing. Just my 2 cents.

Pretty risky to move to a big city where the resorts will literally end up sold out most days. Any other winter it would be fine.

Even going for Ogden and Snowbasin would be a very smart move.

But yeah get a weekly hotel room near your pass and it will work out.

I'm taking advantage of the remote work lifestyle, grabbed a new pair of sticks and am headed out to SLC for a couple months for the ski season. Had a few questions and wanted to see if y'all had any thoughts.

1. Which pass should I get? I was planning on grabbing the epic and mostly skiing park city with a few days at snowbasin. But should I get the IKON instead to do solitude / brighton / alta / snowbird? Or should I get both? Not going to be doing any backcountry and would be spending like 40% of time in the park and 60% the rest of the mountain depending on conditions.

2. What's the deal with COVID? I'm gonna mostly be skiing on the weekends - are the resorts gonna be packed? Is it gonna be impossible to get reservations? If cases continue to go up do we think the resorts are still gonna be open?

3. Where should I live? I know almost nothing about SLC but have a relatively flexible budget - Downtown? As close as possible to PC? How bad is the traffic on the weekends?

But I personally don't really give a fuck, locals only or not, parking will be full anyway, doesn't really make a difference to me where the other guys are coming from, you know by 11am most of the mountain will be tracked out, and that's fine, there will be more powder days.

If you really want to be able to get fresh tracks all day in lift-served terrain, Europe is where it's at, US resorts are generally too small and too crowded while huge ass resorts in the alps sit pretty much empty outside of big vacation periods, you can still get fresh tracks days after a storm. The caveat is that technically inbound is restricted to groomers, outside of that it's not necessarily mitigated (except if the slope could run over a groomer of course), but you know, calculated risk if you know what you're doing, not everywhere is avy-prone, etc.

SkiBum.I think the Ikon is to attractive in terms of money to turn away for these resorts. I could see someone like Snowbird going the way of JH or Aspen - making it a $150 add on to ski there.
