Will patrol try to pull my pass for creating lips/ takeoffs with a shovel?

Title says it all. Haven’t tried it before but am very curious to do so. Do I need to be inconspicuous?

Depends on the mountain and where you are building it. If you are at vail building a booter in the middle of a groomer you are fucked.

I would think that building up something that isn't in direct view of any lift/major runs should be perfectly fine. I would do it when I was a kid and patrol would only do something about it if if was in clear view.

Yes. Best to do so in a place where nobody will see you.

Sometimes they'll leave you alone but usually they'll make you destroy it and sometimes they'll boot you off the hill. All depends on the place.

build it somewhere lowkey but also somewhere you can take laps on it too cuz thats fun. also not a bad idea to take some branches or something and "close it off" when youre done hitting it just in case patrol stumbles upon it. patrol left us alone last year for ski team jumps cuz we threw bamboo over the lips so people didnt get smoked but theyre usually busy and trust us with not getting kids hurt

yeah it depends on the mountain and how chill the patroller is who finds it. but i'd say it's more common for it NOT to be allowed. a lot of places will question you if you try to get on the lift with a shovel too

The move for the shovel is the avy ahovel or even collapsible car shovel in a backpack. A lot of places would never let you up the lift with a shovel.


I get it though. It's a liability. Even terrain parks have a lot if risk with lawsuits. Some random booter in the trail can be bad. And a lot of people suck at making jumps.

I ski up in aspen and they are usually pretty chill about building jumps in bounds. Obviously like everyone else was saying, you can't just build them in the middle of the runs (although I have done this and gotten away with it before), but yeah usually I try and build jumps out of the trees somewhere and in a place where there isn't gonna be a shit ton of jerry's in the landing. If this is the case and you have found a secluded spot with a good landing, you should be good to go. Always listen to the ski patrollers tho if they approach you, don't give them shit, that is where things get ugly. Also, don't build a massive fuckin booter unless you want that shit to get taken down. Some friends and I spent a ton of time building two big jumps in taos once and right when we finished putting all the work in, we got busted and were forced to take them down. Really think about risk vs reward when building in bounds, don't spend a ridiculous amount of time sculpting the perfect cheese block reminiscent of a jump out of MAGMA II, that shit will get taken down. So yeah, just be low key and keep the build quick.

Depends on the mountain and where you put it. I've had to tear down stuff that's in line of sight of a groomer, but if it's off in the trees hidden somewhere generally no one cares. I haven't had my pass threatened over it though, usually they just make you tear it down.

there’s a lot of people who would lost likely die going off a kicker on accident at my mountain so what i’m gonna do is bring spray paint and make them look like park jumps so people can see them. i didn’t read most of this thread so if someone suggested that my bad.

I got bitched at, kicked off the hill, and mkre frequently had to smash the jumps down at the home hill. They had no park. All i wanted to do was ride park.

Eventually they started letting is slide more. But i had to rebuild most of them everyday. But it was fun and alowed me to hit some small jumps.

Then staryed working at gore and straight uo got basically fired for building a jump before i tsught my first lesson. Then they hire me to work parks. That was 14 years and 20 something seasons of terrain park work ago. Keep building shit just don't be an idiot. Also as others mentioned if ski patrol or ayone else come up to you don't be a dick. It never helps.

Out of sight out of mind was our approach to pretty much anything when I worked on patrol. Just don't give them a reason to get involved.

I actually managed to get permission from ski patrol to build a booter few years ago. It was a shitty early season day and they had no park and I built it off the side and out of the way. They rolled up and I told them I was just building it because the park wasn’t open yet and they just told me not to break anything.

Best to be quiet and be well hidden if your gotta build.
Shaping lips and working the landing at generally ok if your only using your skis as a shovel. Actual shovels will be confiscated or asked to put it back in your car.

for getting a pass pulled? Id sit my odds at low. Getting asked to cease by patrol is very high and patrollers watching ya go it very low.

My friend and I got caught the one time we tried to build one and we kept our passes, patrol just wanted us to tear it down cuz they were worried about lawsuits. If you build one off trail in the woods or in a low traffic ungroomed area of the mountain you should be fine, just make sure the shovel you bring is small enough to fit in a backpack.

Also if your mountain has a good park, maybe don't build a ghetto jump in the middle of the trail. Idk, i like building shit so I get it, but when the mtn has like 3 parks in great shape, and people build an almost unrideable jump in the middle of some green run you're like "why though?".

same. built a lip with my buddies at the top of a steepish hill. while i was hiking up the runin they ramp it way up. i hit the lip expecting the nice drop, was not expecting a violent speedbump.

Nah, coppers parks are always pristine, I was only talkin something out of the way, and really only when it has been snowing, to try and catch some air into a soft landing.
