Moving to Colorado, need advice

So I’ve got everything in place to move out to Colorado for early December. All I have to do is pack the car and go. I’m not gonna lie though, the virus is making me a little hesitant. It’s not a health concern for myself but if ski resorts close while I’m out there it’d be devastating. Any advice on what to do/any inside scoops? I basically don’t want to move then have all the resorts close and waste a lot of money when I could have waited. I know no one knows for sure what’s gonna happen but any input would be very helpful for my decision. Appreciate it!

I have no inside info but I personally would wait at least two weeks and reevaluate. The skiing is bad right now, with limited terrain open. I think we will know a lot more about the ‘rona situation as well in a couple weeks. If we keep spiking and more people start dying from the recent spike there’s a decent chance polis pulls the plug or alternatively reservations are so tight we can’t really ski. The best time to be out here is late dec - may anyway for more terrain, pow, daylight, and backcountry and by then we will have a sense of what the government will give us.


also what pass do you have and if it’s epic / ikon can you ski weekdays?

Covid cases in colorado are spiking like crazy right now. I bought an Ikon pass but I'm holding off on using it for now to see how the next few weeks go.

I don't want this to happen, but I think we should probably pull the plug if things don't get under control. Our hospitalizations are also peaking right now, far higher than any point prior to this.

Honestly, I would wait at least until after Thanksgiving to see how it plays out.

OP I would be very hesitant, I lived in Colorado for almost 3 years then spent my last two seasons in Utah. Utah has way better snow plus a ton of dipshits moved to Colorado which sucks especially with the way their politics are going. That being said since there's so many young, stupid, lazy people there its extremely to get a job and make good money. I prefer Utah myself but getting back to the main point things aren't looking good for both spots right now. Hence why I'm waiting till after Christmas to see what is still open. I would wait a little into December though I'm not sure about your living and working situation. Getting a job out west is incredibly easy though the living situation can be tough in mountain towns which is why there's so many people that go to SLC for a winter season. Personally the vibes in Utah suck compared to Colorado though Utah is much more open right now compared to Colorado. Honestly I'm planning on going out in late February and staying for the spring if everything is still open. So right now I'm just waiting to see how they handle people on Christmas vacation and then it will hopefully be better to gauge. Last year in the end of March I had to drive back east unexpectedly which wasn't bad since I wasn't worried money wise though it would suck to drive out and then turn around if everything closes.

If you're moving just to ski, I would rethink that at this point. Like others have said a season is not at all guaranteed esp. with Gov. Polis. Some of the smaller areas (A-Basin and Loveland) promise unlimited skiing to passholders, but for Vail Resorts and others you could easily find yourself SOL on a pow day if reservations are booked.

I think what @PeteMahn was saying about Utah, is with the extreme conservative political nature, they will be much more hesitant to shut things down completely than Colorado. So if you're not worried about catching Covid, you might have a better chance of a ski season in Utah.

Not sure what budget you're on but you could get a touring setup with your pass money and just tour all winter. Saves you the risk of resorts closing but it's expensive and you need to attend an avy course if you haven't already.

Politics meaning it's chill that weed is legal though now there are a shit ton of homeless people, bums and "wooks" that are everywhere in Colorado. Obviously the mountains aren't as bad as Denver and Boulder though there are still a ton of bums in Summit County etc. Hence why is is so easy to find work anywhere. Summit is tight because they have free buses (Not sure how everything is working with Covid), so if you don't want to drive your car all the time you can take the bus. That being said be ready to be bombarded by wooks telling you all types of crazy shit, trying to sell you ketamine and trying to bum shit off of you hahah. You will probably be working with people like this as well. If you don't show up to work high or drunk you're automatically one of the best employee's when you live in Colorado haha. Utah isn't as bad with the bums though Salt Lake is getting more like this.
When I mean Utah being more open this summer while walking around I never wore a mask though going into different stores you will need one. In Colorado there' re trying to give people fines for not wearing a mask when your outside which is fucked. This is more in the city while the mountains aren't as bad once winter comes and the cases get really high this could happen there.

Exactly, personally I could see Colorado shutting things down but not Utah. That being said Time will tell.

Was going to mention this but due to Colorado being the most dangerous when it comes to avalanches then any other state you def should take some classes and serious precautions. I have a touring setup but I never took any classes myself. That being said I have never gone out alone and I was always go with experienced people. Plus I've never really gone into anything gnarly just building backcountry jumps though I still always have a probe, beacon and shovel. This season will be especially sketchy as a bunch of dipshits will be in the backcountry risking their lives as well as others.

I just left Colorado for MANY reasons but the varus situation was indeed one of them on the list. They're already talking about the prospect of a shutdown and if that happens again in peak ski season, it's going to be a very difficult situation there. Everything in Summit and Eagle county is almost entirely reliant on the resorts in some way or another.

Assuming biden takes office in January, they're talking about a mandatory nationwide 4-6 week shutdown. Anything additional before or after is up to the state. It's going to be absolutely devastating to the economy without MASSIVE monetary assistance on the federal and state level for an extended period of time.

A shut down could trigger a mass exodus among employees back to their home states and if there's not enough employees to reboot after the dust settles it could be a situation where they start limiting terrain they open due to staffing that was already cut by double digit percentages going into this season.

I've been in the industry my entire adult life and career and this is the first winter I'm taking off. It's just not something I'm trying to be a part of at the moment with so much uncertainty around "non-essential" activity.

New Mexico resorts were just forced to shut down so take that into consideration as well.

I currently live in Golden, co, but lived in summit for a few years and have been skiing summit for the last 12.

Key was a shit show today, the reservation system would prevent you from being able to just go skiing on your day off or a split, so be aware that it will be a weird year. Abasin isn't restricting it's passholders nor is Loveland, and Copper I think it's only limiting parking so presumably you could take the free summit stage over and expect to go ski. I think Vail employee passes are also unrestricted so if you could get something lined up in advance you might be able to resolve some of your unknowns.

I think the advice to wait and reassess is wise until you've got a solid plan going in. I'd also recommend having a "plan B" activity - ski touring, xc skiing, ice fishing, small game hunting, something else you can look forward to doing in the colorado mountains in the winter without having to be in the resort. The mountains in colorado are really amazing, especially if you go off the beaten path, just be smart about it and you'll discover there is a lot more to enjoy here aside from the resorts (which are dope when you can actually ski them).

I’m doing the exact same thing, I’m already set up to lose big if they close resorts; I can’t IMAGINE they do though. Economy is so dependent and it’s pretty safe.

In my experience about half of the people that move there are just straight up broken inside and resort to 24/7 degeneracy to fuel their lifestyle. Boozin, fuckin everything they can, fuckin people over because of various degrees of desperation and despair.

The other half are running from some sort of situation whether it be a bf/gf, pre college confusion, post college confusion, "i just wanna travel lolxoxo" syndrome, etc.

Then there's a very tiny percentage like myself that moved there for a career in the industry that was already underway and I was looking to play in the "big leagues".

I found myself just so disenfranchised from that mountain town lifestyle after a year or two but ended up staying longer thinking there was legitimate upward mobility in the company.

Mountain town bros be like - "Bro, why don't you wanna come to the bar, bro?"

TL be like - "Because I have to be up at 5am to go reshape a park at 11k ft. that's wind drifted up to my tits. Your eyeballs are yellow from boozing for the last 80 days straight. You haven't showered in 4 days, you're broke, and you're just going to try starting fights with people or make your girlfriend cry in public because you spent money on coke instead of high end dog food for your pack dogs you bring everywhere... That's why I don't want to go to the bar with you."

If your going to go to Colorado I recommend staying the hell away from Denver. I drove up there a few months ago and was horrified at what the city has become. There are broken windows from riots, trash everywhere, literal homeless camps on almost every block. There are drugged out tweakers that wander around like zombies. It was really sad to see because Denver used to be an awesome place back in the 2000s.

I would find a place in Colorado Springs and hit up Monarch. Its about 2 hrs 45 min away but the drive is cool and scenic and there are no lift lines. The park is limited but there is a bunch of tree skiing and its super laid back. The Springs also has Palmer Park and the hiking etc is a lot closer. The virus situation is not nearly as bad down here too.

Damn right i was getting swallowed up by the "fuck me, fuck me up, fuck me over" scene.

It was fun till it wasn't.

That's exactly why I went full kook on dorky little niche shit like snowskating and mogul skiing (and most recently Newschoolery)... where the people are relatively wholesome cuz we're small and supportive and focused on keeping the sport alive.

Nowadays, I'm *mostly* out of the bullshit and have accountability and sincere friendship with nice goal-oriented people.

It took luck, soul searching, big lifestyle changes, and a serious career to chill out enough to be able to find the amazing inspired people Colorado certainly has.

For me, those amazing people don't want anything from me except to have each other's backs and nerd tf out over our goofy ass hobbies.

But I'm from CO so had resources and childhood friendships that i could reinvest into.

How much shoulder rubbing with bad influences does a Summit County transplant have to do to naturally settle into a chill athletic posse that actually gives a shit about them? How much using people and getting used? How much substance abuse? How much paycheck blowin?

You almost gotta get ostracized into it cuz all you care about is the sport and you stopped giving a fuck about the bro lifestyle.

I feel like lack of snow hurts more than the covid fear mongering :D boulder and scummit county are now in "the red phase" but afaik resorts will still be operating, just weirdo restrictions, etc. As for everyone knocking ski town lifestyle (drinks, party), I dunno. Its a phase for most people, and you dont have to do it if you don't want to. Not like you will get fired from work for showing up sober. I just moved back to CO after a 5 year hiatus and im still loving it every bit as much. Been in the ski industry my whole life, wouldn't want it any other way.

Nobody really knows what's happening as fsr at the rona. I'm hoping were in a good enough spot this year since weve been on that mask life, etc, for 8 months. Mtns made plans with covid in mind. A lot of businesses have been operating.

Who know's though. Some areas are already going back into some pretty hard shutdowns. CA is getting sendy on them not that some areas really ever even opened up.

I guess we just have to wait and see honestly. Get out and ski while you can and hope we're cruising through the late spring.

I just moved myself. Don't really know that much abour the govenor etc in WA but hoping for the best. Digging the new job and going out for some laps with the boss today to talk plans for the park.

Idk. It's a fucking weird time, and people should be conscious of their actions, but people also shouldn't dwell on it.

I would say moving to CO to hopefully get a full ski season sounds like a safe bet than going to college these days.

Best of luck OP. Regardless if you move or don't move hopefully you snag some fat turns this season.

Pay enough attention to know what's going on but don't dwell on it too hard.

I'm at keystone right now drinking a to-go beer at the mountain house base area after hiking their mini park all morning. It almost feels normal. So if you're patient and optimistic you can certainly find some good in all this.
