Utah Ski area postponing opening dates - TBD opening - Covid Related?

News from Solitude this afternoon. Opening day of Nov20th pushed to “TBD”. Reason stated is lack of snow. 24/7 snowmaking temps for every day in forecast. Just got 2’ of natural with 1-2’+ in forecast.

This is concerning. New Covid rules went into place today in Utah. (Masks mandatory, gatherings, etc.). This seems like a direct correlation to that, but they are calling it “lack of snow”

Huge red flag in my mind. If another resort or two follows with this, we are in trouble.

Anyone booked any days yet at Snowbird? you can book way more than 14 days online so do they just release the other reservations and guarantee your 14 days, and you just book other days additionally? pretty wide open though especially for mid season

hippystinxI have never experienced a worse guy to girl ratio than being involved in the ski industry. I went to the u of u for two years. Lived in Tahoe for a year, and have been in Colorado for 6 years, with 4 of those years in scummit county. All those places frumpy alcoholic women with no real job love to act like they are gods because there is a 10.1 dude to female ratio and they generally have their pick of what ever douche nossel they so choose because said douche nossel just wants any puss they can get their grubby hands on. Even experienced men not being friendly to new commer's because it might impact their crews chances of scoring pussy if theirs more competition. The techno scene hasn't been that way for me personally, partying for Miami music week there was literally more ladies than men.....Sorry my recreational drug habits doesn't include consuming a 30 pack of shitty beer and a handle of fireball on a tuesday at some friends shitty apartment.

Keep living your life fellow human, try to enjoy the winter as best as you can, this quarantine bullshit has got us all sorts of fucked up. This will be my first ski season in 15 years not skiing because I got more pressing work and I enjoy days at the track with my car more than I enjoy lapping the park and waiting for the occasional pow day which seems to be less and less often.

to put it bluntly: there's too much money on the line for resorts to willingly close again that quickly, not when the golf industry and summer ski resorts proved its possible to operate. capitalism and all that jazz.

If it gets to the point where they are forced to close again that means we have a bigger problem on our hands (and tbh those trends aren't looking good)

seems like resorts are starting to enact No Uphill rules to get things ready to go. webcams look good. if people could just like not go to the bars/restaurants in summit county for now, that would be fucking cool too lol. not the time for $2 scooners tuesdays at shucks right now.

just dont go and do some dumb shit early-season while touring. I read a UAC observation this AM that included a important tidbit about people already skiing upper elevation stuff like its a midseason powday. gotta be patient this season lol.

At least the state is enforcing 10pm closures right now, there are actually tons of people who go to the bar at night, not sure why you'd want to go out right now.

I think the shutdown in NM is mostly related to the medical infrastructure being at a breaking point. For example, Taos has around 4 icu beds. So we really can not handle half of Texas showing up for Thanksgiving.

Yeah I mean first week of covid in grizzly was nuts but today was fucked, picture a fairly crowded Alta without wildcat parking/resort uphill. Plenty of rental skis on packs, nerds hot lapping, and kids building jumps.

Titus69Yeah I mean first week of covid in grizzly was nuts but today was fucked, picture a fairly crowded Alta without wildcat parking/resort uphill. Plenty of rental skis on packs, nerds hot lapping, and kids building jumps.


Went up to Empire area/DV-ish area too this afternoon with a buddy just for a quick jaunt. Still a bit of cars up there surprisingly but parking wasn't so bad. Mostly people taking their dogs out for a run while they skinned up the road to guardsmans or families sledding, not too many skiers. A bit tracked from earlier but decent enough coverage to lace some fun turns. That UAC post earlier with the pic of that 10-person group trudging up what looked like a real pain in the ass skintrack was wild haha, about what i expected the cottowoods to be like today if you didnt get out earlier/went to lesser crowded safer spots. doesnt make the PC ridgeline exempt though, its gonna get wicked over here once canyons-side upper mtn opens up and that spooky sidecountry is available to anyone

This is true, I work at Brighton, we hear shit over the air waves. Their main pump is down, they have a part being driven from out of state and had some problems. Resorts should be opening soon. Plenty of snow up in the high stuff. Brighton might be opening on Thursday. Who knows tho, that’s just what I’m hearing but who really knows.

Yeah I think it was out in twin lakes pass where the photo was taken, I had a few sudden realizations we were getting close to other groups but was never too bad. Coming back down was just funny to see but concerning, hopefully the people boot packing will think they’re fine then realize it’s actually very hard to go far in 5’+ away and don’t get touring stuff.
