Vail reservation system starts today - tell me the horror stories

Just started today. I have heard nothing but bad on the system. People waiting hours to reserve skiing. Who is doing it? Who’s still in “line” waiting?

I don’t have Epic. I’m just curious how Vail is blowing this

Me and 43,000 other people according to the wait screen. It was over 150K when I started lmao. But they just updated it with a message that says there’s still “availability at every resort for every day of the core season!”

I've been in line for more than an hour and there are still 45k people ahead of me. I have no idea how full it's gonna get but I'm gonna be pissed if I can barely get the days I want this season.

Yah I felt like skipping the online shitshow this morning. Not even gonna able to ski consistently till Jan so we'll see how it stands there. Gonna take some getting used to I'm sure

I happened to be browsing Facebook instead of working yesterday and saw that they were accepting reservations for opening week at Keystone and somehow got one for Sunday even though I was not actually planning on going up prior to that. I doubt that will happen again without a lot of pre-planning, especially once the full mountain is open. I could be wrong though once all the other mountains are open...

not at all, you can ride the bus, hitch hike, carpool with a friend. So many other ways to get there, but once you're up there, you don't have to worry about not riding because you couldn't get your pass reserved.

Shit show of a season for some places.


If I wasn't working at ski areas, I'd probably get a pass to a smaller hill that was less of a destination and shred that up. Having to reserve stuff in advance ruins it for me before it even begins. I'm bad at dealing with that shit and it gives me anxiety.

My experience so far... Waited 4hrs in a line of 150,000 to reserve my “early season days”. When I went to reserve them the website lists them as “not yet available”. Now I am in a line of 3,000 for customer service. Also looks as if all but two east coast hills early season reservations are not yet available. Yikes wish me luck.

You have a very simplistic view of this whole process. The bus service already sucks and I know you ski only on weekends so even before COVID catching a bus up on a pow day is nearly impossible. Now add in COVID (where UTA is limiting the number of people on a bus) an you'll be waiting an hour or two for a bus at the least (not even including pow day) Unless you manage to hitch hike in the back of a truck the whole way up the canyon I don't foresee many people stopping to pick you up this winter with COVID. Guess you could carpool with a friend but you better hope your friend is good at making reservations on weekend. Not trying to be a debbie downer, I just wouldn't phrase Snowbirds parking reservations as a much easier process than Vail and laugh at Vail over this.

maybe you're right. I did have the idea of a locals groupme for ridesharing, but Groupme was just not functioning for the one thing it was designed to do. I ought to make a new one on something, be it facebook, or whatnot. I wish instagram didn't limit chatrooms to 40 people or that would be ideal.

I will agree with you on that, I do feel like there will be groups on social media to carpool and finesse reservations. Saw that this spring/summer at A-Basin, locals would share their reservations with other locals and shit. Defs could be a play.

opened the 'waiting room' page around 8 or 9, left it open while I worked, got a ding around 11:45 I think, took me 2 min to reserve days, finished without a problem.

also finally confirmed that you can have 7 'priority' days *and* 7 'week-of' days reserved at a time, which is a relief since the initial announcement made me think the week-ok reservations cut into future reservations.

To be fair, at least in Utah, we know when a storm is coming 3-5 days ahead of time, you can make reservations for any of the following 7 days.

Just popped in and made some reservations, every day is available at PC still, no idea the limit. I locked down my bday, closing weekend and new years day, some other Saturdays just to lock down some busy times.

Made it through the queue for a second time and it actually went smoothly this time - booked some days at Stevens and Okemo and it does seem, based on how many hundreds of thousands of people were using the site today, that the system is holding up ok.

I went to Keystone solo on Sunday and it wasn't bad at all, no lines for the lift, maybe stood behind 4 people at most since people aren't grouping up due to COVID regulations. Side hits for days.
