lizard.stuffI have been making pants lately and I have found that 3 layer waterproof breathable fabric is for sure the way to go. But if you use this nice waterproof fabric and you don’t use seam tape on all of the seams then it is pointless and won’t be waterproof, so make sure to get seam tape as well. Good luck, making your own gear is super fun!
FitzRoyTo actually be helpful though the site mentioned above is pretty good. If you’re looking to get branded membranes, Polartec Neoshell is probably your best bet and you can get it at milldirecttextiles.com and discoveryfabrics.com
rubberpantaloonsYoyo dude i made myself mitts pants and a few messenger bags for myself last season, for the mitts and pants i used a waterproof denier 1000 cordura material with taped seams and a dwr coated canvas type material i had on top. The cordura material is dummy strong and super waterproof, it is a bitch to cut tho which could be considered a good thing for snow pants.
Goretex material isnt very widely available, but i buy my cordura and other fabrics from rockywoods fabrics online store, and sometimes amazom for buckles and seam tape.
I also upcycle old goretex/ripstop/raincoats for backpacks and messenger bags, would recomend doing it if you have any old stuff you dont wear and its super fun.
Hope i could help! Feel free to message me if youd like more detail or links to anything

animatorDo you guys know if Polartec neoshell is gonna be up to par with like typical shells that you would buy off the rack? I’m worried it’s gonna be more like a windbreaker and less like a ski shell if that makes sense
FitzRoyI’m not too knowledgeable on the subject but I think what you’re getting at might be that most ots neoshell pieces are rainshells with a lighter weight face fabric? I think there is probably an option to buy neoshell w a tougher fabric but im not certain. If you’re concerned about the waterproofing, I havent heard of any people with problems. There are a few blister articles out there that might help your choice, just search “neoshell vs gore tex blister” or smth like that.
animatorYeah sort of. If you think about like a Patagonia or North Face windbreaker, the material used is usually like super thin, lightweight, and sort crinkly/loud when it touches. If you take like one of those brands ski jackets, the materials are usually softer and feel more substantial/higher quality almost?
