TRVP_ANGELwhen the setup is worth more than my life
QuaggyReddit is just one big "look at me guys" circle jerk
Saga. The positioning of the top boot is bothering me. How did they not flip it so it fits in the correct way!

skiingskisI basically did the same thing this year.
What I don't understand if you have that much cash, why go with a hybrid setup? I guess storage can be an issue - especially if your significant other get annoyed by piles on money leaning on the wall...
I went with hybrid style boots because I needed new resort boots too, but otherwise it seems like the obvious choice was pin bindings and a lighter ski.

BigPurpleSkiSuitRetail that is probably about 5k at least.
ericformanSki jackets are the piece of gear that confuses me the most. I feel like they are kind of a scam unless you live in a place where it rains all the time (New England / PNW) in which case they are pretty important. CO is always like sunny and beautiful and everyone is out there in $500 3L hardshells sweating uncomfortable. I feel like some UA + random flannel I had since 9th grade + a hoodie on top is just way more functional, comfortable, breathable, and costs $0 with the one downside of it sucks if the lift stops and its 40mph winds. Even in like 80% of our storms its a dry 4 inches - you don't need some super fancy jacket.
I don't *think* people like spending money to make their lives worse but I just don't get it.
BigPurpleSkiSuitI actually wear a hoodie most days now instead of a full jacket.
1080noscopeIs that why your name isn't colored purple anymore?
eheathPeople like this man keep the industry going
SofaKingSickyeah these dudes literally subsidize the industry for dirtbags like us, we should be thanking these folks

pinkcamo1000you're not wrong but to me these are both arguments for why we need to change the industry
No.QuarterI kinda agree, I typically forgo the shell on the way up when I'm touring and just pace myself to stay warm enough but not get sweaty and then throw on the shell at the top after I've cooled down a bit. But having a shell that breathes well as well as being waterproof enough is super nice when you are doing lift accessed hiking laps or sidecountry, or just don't wanna fuss with strapping your shell to your pack and having another thing to do in the transition or lose all of your warmth every time you stop.
eheathChange what? There will always be gapers buying nice gear, its not an issue unless you've got some serious self esteem problems.
ericformanThat is fair. Also, having a waterproof shell and puffy is pretty important if you are out of the resort and could end up spending the night in the woods. I was more talking about the generic resorter riding lifts in nice weather wearing a $300 800 fill down and a $500 3L jacket that are not super comfortable.

pinkcamo1000I think it would be cool if the ski industry valued die hard skiers like us instead of rich people, I guess that means I have self esteem problems though
e.litttThey do, it's called getting an job within the ski industry and utilizing the industry discounts.

eheathWhat do you mean "valued"? die hard skiers are one thing, but most people who ski park aren't spending a lot of money on gear, most people on NS buy used equipment/price point gear and dont have the cash to be "valued". Companies focus on rich people because that's who buys their gear, I'm not sure what you're looking for here.
DominatorJacquesSo what part of that gear is going to save his life in an avalanche?
A lot of folks are going to have a big learning curve this season.
pinkcamo1000Seems like capitalism is the problem to me, publicly owned rope tows are the way forward

Titus69Are you asking us? Or did you not see the beacon on the lower right?
SofaKingSicki'm with you in that i wish skiing were more accessible and less expensive, i'm in the dirtbag skier category and i love the push toward cheaper takes on skiing by people like Vishnu
but in terms of gear, i don't see how else we'd have the things we do. the money and engineering that goes into ski equipment is fucking wild and i doubt it would be able to exist at at this level at decent prices if the only people that bought an item were people that pushed it to its limits
i'm def not the guy who's going to give you a milton friedman style speech on capitalism haha but i think aspects of skiing as a sport are somewhat unavoidably costly. i'm sure we're all envious of skateboarders being able to do their thing literally almost anywhere
pinkcamo1000I agree, I just think that if we want skiing to be more like skateboarding we need to actually try to make things change. Throwing up our hands and saying "rich tourists are the financial driver of the industry so it's totally fine for resorts to prioritize them!" isn't the way to change things.

c0wb0y“resorts should only cater to people rich enough to spend thousands on gear” - no one is saying this.
