As a general rule of thumb, anything you do which could annoy / cause this demographic to get upset will probably get a response from the yellow jackets (eg switch, bombing it, sitting on your tails etc). Just my 2 cents, think about it from their point of view and you’ll probably be good

That said a lot of run ins can be avoided. Any slow trails or crowded trails near the base that everything flows into it's best to go slow.

If you ever see them posted up just make some turns even if you're going slow. They seem to m have a boner for busting people that ski better than them.

If you ever do end up in a situation generally just be cool and don't yell at them. People freaking out and throwing a tantrum almost always makes it worse. Unfortunately unluke ski patrol, a lot if the yellow jackets aren't great skiers and get off on power so it's always risky.

Try to avoid a situation from the beginning, be cool if something happens, and if you're actually doing something where they might pull your pass, gtfo of there. Either cruise to another part of the mountain or bounce for the day. In that situation even if they approach you don't talk to them or give them your pass. They can't touch you. Last year at northstar I was changng into my boots in the snowmaking trailer and there was a radio on scan. Busy Saturday. They were just blowing it up with their wanna be cop chatter. "I got one heading down towards you at the ____ life. Black coat green pants, I'm heading down there if we coukd get some backup" kind of shit. Just one call after another.

Also to the average jerry skiing switch seems reckless and dangerous.


Basically know that they're there, and choose your battles. Maybe you're right, maybe you're not, but sometimes it doesn't really matter and it's never worth losing your pass over.

bennwithtwonsi got shit from a yellow jacket at northstar a few years ago for skiing switch before the baffles above vista and i wrote in to the resort with one of those comment cards and told them to train their yellowjackets on bernoulli's principle of fluid dynamics. i never heard back but haven't been harassed since, so maybe they got the message.

Trumpkin2020Yeah dude I have zero respect for people who blaze down a green run at mach speed in a beginner area weaving in and out and literally brushing people as they pass. Could easily kill a small child and it's discouraging and intimidating for beginners to see that too.

I was at HV one time trying to teach my now wife to ski and she would be so nervous on the easier trails because we were constantly getting zipped by boarders on green trails. Like listen here motherfucker, nothing on this ski area is truly difficult (the blues are greens and the blacks are easy blues). Let's take this to the big boy trails and I'll show you how it's done. You're trash.

It's happened many times. Especially bad early season when every trail open is green blue and many slow zones. When the blacks open up Im going fast. I won't hit your family, I won't spray you, I wont yell at you, but you can get fucked if you think you're entitled to me going slow because you're there. I am speed.

Also agreed that plenty of people ski out of control while thinking they're on control.

grantn_Ok so I live in park city and there is some hate on the yellow jackets, (most of the time rightfully so) but I’d like to know your opinions on my story.

Its not too complicated, I was skiing switch out of the park just to get some practice in, and this yellow jacket yelled at me while riding, at first I didn’t know he was talking to me because I thought skiing switch was a perfectly acceptable thing to do. I then got to the lift line and the dude makes a scene yelling noticeably loud at me. I didn’t end up getting a mark on my pass, but he said it was reckless for me to be skiing switch in an area out of the park.

So I find it kind of funny that me switch skiing (I like to think I am pretty comfortable skiing switch) in an area out of the park is more reckless than beginners who don’t know etiquette cutting people off mid-run. No hate to beginners, we all have to start somewhere.

Am i the asshole for this situation? I decided not to back talk the dude cuz I didn’t get a mark on my pass but damn that’s pretty unreasonable imo.

Some folks can ski switch with no issues. I can't very long because I lack the neck to see where I am going.
We all know folks that ski switch at 50 mph and do it as safe as any good skier going forward.
Glad we don't have Yellow's where I ski.

1080noscopeI'm in the same boat neck-wise. I found the trick is to exaggerate the scissor stance to allow the rotation to happen in your hips/torso, not your neck. Your chest/shoulders should be almost parallel to your skis, which lets you see behind you with minimal neck twisting.

Yung_GnarleyYeah, your neck shouldn't have to strain. Just open your legs up and twist your hips/back. Also make sure you are switching which shoulder you look over when you turn. It's easy to stay looking over one shoulder but you'll never turn correctly unless you look uphill between turns and initiate the turn w your head
