Imo, the solution to mental health problems isn't altering your mental state with drugs. Exercise, healthy diet, good sleep, and not using drugs at all would seem to be more helpful

While diet exercise and all that can go a long way depression, bi-polar, etc. are illnesses just like the flu or something. Some folks genuinely need the help. Should the meds be an option reserved for those who have tried what you suggested already? Absolutely. But to call those who need them a pussy is inconsiderate of their situation.

Unless you’re dealing with extreme cases of mental Illness and thought disorders (like schizophrenia) you can master your own thought patterns and get better without external help.

The best person to help yourself is yourself. You know what’s best to do. Drugs to help you are the easy way out and perhaps that’s part of the problem, people who use and want to use prescription drugs have a skewed perception on reality. In the sense that they are shy of hard work and expect life to be easy. The truth is it’s not, but as I’ve said you’ve got to pick your balls up and send it.

Meds can be life changing if used properly and are prescribed appropriately. Diet exercise and such can all improve your physical and mental wellness but they’re not going to fix neurotransmitter imbalances associated with mental illness.There is a big difference in having a mental illness and going through a hard time/being unable to cope with x, y or z. Maybe because they haven’t read enough? (Put in work to solve their existential issues) If you’ve followed any form of meditative practice you’ll release what causes suffering /dukkha is clinging. People cling to this world because they think the things in it are real, when in reality there is nothing but voidness. Upon this introspection you can slowly work on letting go, as suffering itself is void - like a hologram suffering is projected and conceived of by the mind.

I found they work.

They're not a panacea, as others have mentioned that diet, exercise, and general mental wellness go a long way as well.

However, for me personally, they raise my baseline "mood". I wouldn't say I'm naturally "depressed" as some may be (if you're experiencing severe depression or a valley if you're bipolar) but I'm not always cheerful like others. In that sense, meds allow me to feel neutral rather than down. To be cheerful I have to engage in other things.

Is it purely psychological?

I don't think so, I notice a big difference with and without my medication. But I still need to stay active (biking, skiing, etc.) as I mentioned to make sure that I am happy and upbeat rather than just apathetic.

Talk to a health professional, whether it's a PCP or a psychiatrist, and they may direct you down the proper path.

There's a difference between having a rough period and having legitimate mental health issues. There's no shame in either just as there's no shame in getting help.

I don’t care how much self care, positive thoughts, coping skills or defense mechanisms someone uses, those techniques alone arent going to entirely nor effectively treat a true mental illness. Treating mental illness is never a one size fits all kind of thing. I’m glad that you were able to deal with your issue(s) by just “dealing with it” or whatever that means but that is not practical advice to give to the majority of the population struggling.

Well benzos really do literally eliminate anxiety. This is the reason why people do really dumb shit on bars, because there is literally no self doubt, anxiety, or foresight of a bad outcome. It's also why they're cripplingly addictive.

Yeah benzos thankfully aren't really used for a long-term treatment plan. Most doctors won't prescribe them for longer than 2-4 weeks, max, depending on the condition.

They were finally given a black box warning this last month because of their abuse potential and the side effect profile.

That being said, they were the greatest thing I've ever taken when I had severe back spasms for like, 3 weeks, after hurting it at Snowbird.

There's no shame in that. I know exactly what that's like. If medication is what it takes to get you back to loving what you do, so be it. Better that than being apathetic to things you used to love.

If you have insurance, check out your plan to see if and potentially who they cover in the mental health field. Sometimes all it takes is a few sessions talking to someone, other times it takes a combination of that and medication.

Either way, it has the potential to really help.

FWIW, there are a TON of different drug options. There's no "best" option. It may take trying a few before you figure out which works best for you personally.

One thing of note is that with most of the SSRI drugs, there is a potential for libido issues. Thankfully there are two other drugs, Wellbutrin (bupropion) and Remeron (mirtazapine), both non-SSRIs, that have similar results as SSRIs without the issues. If you see a doctor, they should tell you this but in case they don't, now you know about it.

If you’re questioning anything just go get an opinion from a professional. It’s easier to get out of a 2 foot hole than a 10 foot hole in the event something is wrong. If things aren’t necessarily out of the ordinary, at least you were proactive and made your health a priority.

For example, diabetes (duh), anxiety & depression (which I know you don't believe in), Erectile Dysfunction, dwarfism, even autism can be linked to an excess of hormones and chemicals in the brain. I'm sure I could come up with more if I put a moment's thought into this.

Honestly, nearly every endocrine disorder, most immunologic disorders, and most blood disorders are Influenced, caused and/or exacerbated by chemical imbalances.

I think they work well to get you stabilized. I got some prescribed and it brought me back to ground level. Got back into my hobbies, stopped drinking and now I'm feeling way better than I did 8 months ago when I got them prescribed. Haven't used them in a bit as I got my life back on track.

I would say yes meds do work. Research shows best outcomes are from a combination of both medications AND therapy/counseling versus either of those alone. Many people stay on them forever but it's a good idea and some people do take holidays where they taper off and don't need antidepressants/anti-anxiety meds for periods of time. Unlike some other mental health disorders, depression is something you don't always have to have meds for all the time. Considering you say you've tried non-pharmacological approaches without success, you are correct in thinking adding meds would be a good next option. Sometimes it takes a while for folks to find a medication that works best for them. Weigh the pros and cons of each and the side effects with your doctor. Most likely they'll start you on an SSRI that basically increases serotonin levels and can treat and prevent both anxiety and depression. If you're really serious, I'd consider seeing a psychiatrist cuz they'll 100% know better than your average family doctor.

Active and healthy drug and alcohol free lifestyles can complement your therapy efforts and serve as important non-pharmacological approaches. Daily meditation can work wonders too. Minimizing social media time can be useful too.

Anyone who still lives by the old ways of "you're a pussy if you seek help" is an idiot. This isn't 1940. You're probably just insecure if you say this. These are real problems that a vast number of the population deal with. Mental health issues need to be addressed openly and without hesitation. There are still way too many stigmas around mental health. I know for a fact there's a good number of folks on here with mental health issues so some of those comments by the ignorant folks above are counterproductive and rude.

If you leave both paths open until the particle hits the detector, you will always find interference-pattern/waveform behaviour, whereby the particle effectively travels down both paths and interferes with itself as it comes together to hit the detector. And that path-history/information appears to then be overlaid onto the past. This is a variant of Wheeler's Delayed Choice Experiment, or Quantum Eraser experiments. Plants use this to make photosynthesis work, in a fascinating way. Photons act as probability waveforms until they reach the chlorophyll cells, where they suddenly behave as particles, allowing photosynthesis to take place. Unobserved by a conscious observer, a photon exists as a probability distribution spread across the entire universe, meaning any 2 photons that are unobserved, have p-values for/at every point in the universe. Are they overprescribed? Definitely. Everything is these days. Are diet and exercise important? Hell yeah. Eating well is great for you and makes you feel way better. Same with excercise. It can have a massive impact on your physical and mental health.

That said some people literally need theae drugs. Fuck the "i don't need pills i need nature" bullshit.

OP I've had friends prescirbed them that didn't take them, or stopped taking them and were fine. I have friends you take them and it's been extremely benneficial. Everyone is different. Good diet and excercise are a great place to start, and if you can solve the issue with that, and other lifestyle changes that's great. Avoiding certain situations, substances, doing positive things, whatever. But some people absolutely benefit from these drugs.

If you end up getting prescribed something, follow your doctors plan. Don't fuck around with them. And don't let somebody on the internet make you feel shitty because shoving kale into your face while on the stairmaster didn't solve your problems.

I say what I say because of dealt with these things, hell I was kicked out of home at 16. I could of got in with the wrong crowd dealing drugs or whatever. But I said fuck it. And now at 22 I’m more successful than 99% of people my age because of my mentality.

It's not all about you my dude. Peoples friends, family, even pastors have gotten them to go off meds.

Dude it's great if you've turned around and are doing well, it really is, I get resenting the doctor/pharmies side of it, I get it, but come on man. Some people this stuff really helps. Life changing help. Allowing people to live normal lives instead of just spiralling out of control.

Hell I had contempt for everything because of this (i don't have words to describe her) lady that I saw in high school that tried to get me locked up. I was so hurt and pissed that I opened up and she just fucked me over. Only in the last few years have I been open to trying again. I haven't been on any meds since high school partly because I didn't want to take them, didn't trust anyone, and more recently havent had health insurance for 5 years.

My diets not always great, it's massively improved but I exercise regularly. Even in the times where my diet was on point and exercising a bunch, I felt way better but that didn't mean that I wasn't still fucked. And one moment away from spiraling into gnarly shit.

Idk. Like I said multiple times, it's awesome that things have worked for you, but you aren't everyone. These drugs may be overprescribed, but they absolutely can and do help people and they have saved lives.
