Watches sort of took over skiing for a brief time as my main/big passion. Skiing will always be number 1 (been on here for almost 20 years), but I actually landed in the watch industry in the last few years and thats most of what I do now! Cool to get back into NS for the first time in years during COVID shenanigans and come back to watch content after all these years
Picked up one of these off aliexpress for 99$ with a seico 6r35 movement. They claim 300m wr with the case, but who knows... in any case I worn it in a rainstorm and it didnt die.. and ive worn it in the shower a bunch of times since and its still going so seems alright!

Nice I definitely appreciate a classic flieger dial. I really dig some of the simpler stuff from Avi-8 if you've heard of them. I've been skiing with my seiko for the past month. It only has 30m wr but I haven't had any problems so far

when Im skiing I just use a cheap casio because its lightweight and I just nato strap it to my jacket cuff.
Thats a sweet piece. I really like the combination of roman numerals on the dial with arabic numerals on the inner bezel. It's like a super classy type b
I own a decent (i think?) hamilton my uncle gave me as a graduation gift. My dumbass broke the crystal. I'd love to get it fixed one day, but it's been sitting in a drawer for years because I'm obviously an idiot who can't have nice things.
My gf said she wants to get me a watch for my bday and I'm stoked to start wearing one and hopefully impulsively use my phone less. Can't wait to see what she comes up with

Ill probably pay more for the watch strap I end up putting on it... and Im not a guy who goes for expensive straps.
Is it the most impressive watch ever? hell no. the rotor is growly, theres no display back (not that that matters because Im sure this movement isnt sexy to look at) and the styling isnt quite my taste, as I'm more into pilot/field/tool watches... but its perfect for a daily driver or a super cheap dress watch, and it was even cheaper than a basic digital Casio.
Get that crystal fixed, It shouldnt cost you very much at all to do it... like 50-75$ usually.

It totally depends on the crystal you replace it with. You could do just a simple acrylic or mineral crystal (aka hard glass) fix which should cost you no more than 50$ since the crystal is cheap and youre basically paying 60% of the cost just for the service.. If the crystal was already acrylic or mineral crystal, I generally stick with what it was..
But if you spend money on some fancy sapphire thing so as to make sure you dont scratch or crack the crystal ever again (though it could still happen), then youre going upwards 150-200$ - especially if its some rare size or unique fit.
...that said, its pretty likely hamiltons crystal sizes are pretty standard, as they are more of a working-mans watch company started in America, not one of the fancy dressy swiss brands like patek or Jaeger or frederique... even though those companies do probably have fieldish/tooly watches in their lineup, Hamilton is more known for working watches with simple circular shaped crystals..

Additionally, the labour cost of changing out a crystal is generally really minimal. Unless you take it to a repairman who is mega meticulous about your watch and charges accordingly, it should be a quick procedure. Sometimes they dont even need to remove the movement from the case to replace the crystal - that said, id probably spend a little extra and have a guy take your movement out of the case, put it on a timegrapher, and do some basic adjustment to make sure its ticking as it should. so long as it hasnt been through the ringer, it shouldnt need any big repairs besides the crystal.

I’ve owned two orients and gifted a bambino. All punch above their weight in fit and finish except for the garbage leather straps they use. I haven’t personally had my hands on a bracelet but I would imagine it’s similar quality level.
Yeah man.. I believe its about a 1973? I'm not sure and dont really remember. I picked it up while shopping for a Nikon F2 at one of the many Watch & Film camera shops they have here... I was going through everything and found it for no shit, like 250$. They usually go for 3-4 times that. Its the watch I wear out when I want to look and feel more impressive. I don't wear it every day, as the movement definitely will tear itself up if I did that, but I wind it up and give it a whirl for a day or 2 every couple of weeks to keep it in shape.
Im actually pretty stoked on this little orient tri-star I picked up for 20$ lol. I usually wear my flieger or my field watch or my quartz chronograph, so its nice to have a no-nonsense yet nice watch to play with as a more everyday piece when the king seiko doesnt make sense..
Got a seiko, tag, Bulova collection and a few citizens for work, used to really like watches, not so much now, if someone asks me the time I habitually look at my phone anyway.

part of the reason I got into watches is because It got annoying having to pull my phone out of my pocket all the damn time, and because having a stopwatch ready to go on my wrist was way easier... started wearing a basic little casio around, and just moved up from there.
Best to save something like that til you develop less clumsy tendencies, I myself used to destroy watches, phones, and glasses, I’ve changed a lot and don’t have that problem no more

Hamilton makes a great watch, your uncle definitely hooked you up. The one you've got is really versatile, you could dress it down with a nato strap and wear it with jeans and a t shirt or throw a nice leather strap on it and wear it as a dress watch. You should definitely get it fixed.

If you want an altimeter watch just save up a little more and get a tissot t touch. When i was in switzerland with my family my parents were busy asking all sorts of ppl what these watches were that all these swiss ppl were wearing and they all said they were tissot watches. Apparently 9/10 swiss citizens wear a tissot and switzerland is the mecca of watchmaking and always has been. So that tells you something about the quality of tissot watches.
the tissot t touches are also cool as fuck. The minute and hour hands detach and move around to give you readings of altitude, relative and barometric air pressure, compass, stopwatch,
They were 400$ back around 2010 but now they are around 1000$.
still a good value imo, but it seems the swiss money printing staff havent been boofing bath salts like the autists in the us federal reserve

eh they're all good for different occasions. the tissot is my every day watch. it's a little dressy though so if I'm wearing something more casual I'll opt for the seiko. the seiko is also my skiing watch since it's so light I don't even notice its there. then my g shock is what I'll wear hiking, camping, fishing, or if I'm doing something where I don't want to worry about scratching the crystal.
The g shock is also what I use to set the time on my other watches since it syncs with an atomic clock every night.

My new Vostok amfibia. Absolutely in love with this watch. Got the bezel on ebay.
$20 submariner homage. Pretty good for the price but its a little too big, I think I'm going to sell it and get a San Martin.
My first and probably my favorite mechanical watch. Soviet Era Raketa. I got lucky and snagged this one on ebay for 7 bucks.
Ive been itching for a classic amphibia for a while... Id love to modify one with a pilot style dial. My only complaint about them is how far they stick out off the wrist.
And that is a score for that Raketa... any of those old Raketas, Luchs, Poljots, and Sekondas are actually pretty awesome. Have you seen the Raketa 24hr or the Luch one hand? theyre a lot like yours in size, but only one hand!
I have a Sekonda Automatic abot that same size that unfortunately doesn't keep good time at all, but I love how svelte and thin it is. I cant tell you how many people have been enamored with it when they see what it is. Id love to get one of these to replace it with.. Russian/Soviet watches are fun as fuck.

Guaranteed to work, tough as shit enough to have been passed down through a whole family of teenage drivers, cheap enough that if it does fail, you can just get another, or repair it by hitting it hard with a hammer, and somehow still super classy despite its spartan design.

Mind blowing think how they got tge hands to move fir different functions but just looking for a designated hiking watch and my setup is expensive enough, I'm thinking more like 59.95$ unless you got a spare I can have

I took my hamilton into a service center and they said it is so old that it needs to be sent to hamilton direct to see if they even have parts. If not, they'll try to offer an exhange. Kinda curious what that may be.
