Hey diesel truck owners, a wee question for ya.

The only advice i could give about diesels is to get a 2003 or older ford diesel which used to have an 18 wheeler tier international diesel engine which will last 50 yrs

AbiHMy truck was totalled a few weeks back and I was thinking about getting a diesel dodge 2500 because the gas 2500's mpg is trash.
I'll be living in my truck camper full time this season and know that diesels can be a rough in the winter and I won't have a place to plug it in.... Can you have a diesel in the winter without being able to shoreline it? If you can is it bad for the truck?

I know Cummins makes excellent diesel engines, but dodge makes a shit product... we used to have dodge work trucks and there wasn’t a week where one of our trucks wasn’t in the shop...

Lots to think about on this one. Where are you from, for temperature reasons? What is your price range? What years are you looking at, etc..

Diesel can be a pain in the winter, but I am from Alberta, Canada, and see extremely cold temps. That being said, I have been around diesel trucks, tractors and heavy equipment since I was born and if you can take care of them properly they will treat you well.

Every vehicle has its own issues, so Iwould suggested narrowing down which year you are looking at so you can see which engine it has. Cummins has a great platform, but Dodge has a bad reputation for front ends and transmissions.

How much driving do you really do? Diesels are great if your doing distance driving consistently, twice a week kind of thing. But for a daily driver they are pricey and take a some love to maintain especially older trucks. They aren't huge fans of the cold but cycle the glow plugs a couple times I've never had an issue. Again, never had an older diesel though they could probably be nightmares.

They sound cool and wont mind having that camper in the back which will be nice though.

1999-2006 ford superdutys gasoline are the amazing. It was fords last great years of building trucks that didn’t suck.

I had an 2003 ford 350 superduty van with 5.4 engine(same engine as the trucks) and only issues were spark-plugs. But that’s an easy DIY fix. Kind of regret trading it in but van life doesn’t last for ever.
