GeorgeWBushseen so many of these threads lately and I just have to say it... you should always factor in the cost of an Avy 1 class into buying your first touring gear, without proper training, you are a liability not an asset, no matter how many years you've been skiing. also to answer your original question, if your friends are the slightest bit fit, you probably will not be able to keep up with snowshoes if the snow is light and/or deep. if the snow is dense, your friends are slow, and you're a big cardio guy then you might have a chance just take avy 1 please
