Grizzly/polar bear defense

I dont know what happened to the old thread i cant find it.

Im all about researching what product i would buy if i ever did need to buy something for a specific use/purpose even though 9x out of 10 i will never actually end up needing it.

For the question “what would you carry as a defense weapon in grizzly/polar bear infested country?”

i have narrowed down to 2 choices.

1 is the AA12 shotgun. It can be fired rapidly and if a bear is charging and gets very close this may be the best weapon to keep you alive.







the other is a sako kodiac in 375 h&h. The 375 h&h round is the most popular round used for elephant and cape buffalo Hunting in africa, so it is surely strong enough to stop a grizzly.






i dont want to go hunt grizzly bears.
but i saw the video of the guy who gets the front half of his head crushed in the jaws of a grizzly and ripped off. Im not interested in that happening to me so im not going to go frolicking around dangerous brown bear country with a little bottle of bear spray.

feel free to try to stop a volkswagon sized omnivore with your little bottle of skunk piss. Im good with the gun, but thanks anyways.

I have a gamo magnum break barrel airgun which is the most powerful human powered airgun you can buy. Its kind of funny that even though you are joking, there is nothing theoretically stopping a gun manufacturer from designing a multi pump or multi crank air rifle that you pump 100 times until the pressure chamber has enough air in it to fire a 50 cal magnum round at the same velocity as it comes of of a barret 50 cal. You might need a very long barrel but yeah.

if you have one of these theoretical airguns for bear defense, just make sure you hit him with the first shot otherwise youre fucked

Could be wrong, but I think airguns by nature can only fire a projectile up to the speed of sound, since this is the maximum speed the compressed air can expand at. Whereas powders create expanding gases moving at supersonic speeds due to the chemical reaction. There are a few big bore airguns on the market that are legal for deer hunting, they shoot what is essentially a .50 minie ball using a precharged air tank.

Why not carry both? Bear spray IS proven to be effective for all bears and requires minimal accuracy. I'd consider my gun as a way to either use as a sound deterrent or for when my canister is empty. Definitely a semi-auto

So you’re just going to hike around with that rifle/shotgun in your arms ready to shoot? Not very practical. If you’re going the firearm route, I think something like a .454 Casull ready to go on your hip would be best. Even then you better be quick and have a good aim if you startle a Grizzly in dense brush and it charges.

I carry bear spray because I think it’s your best bet in the aforementioned encounter situation. I had something similar happen minus the charging and I very well would not have been fast/accurate enough with a firearm if the bear had charged, but with bear spray I think I could’ve had a chance.

I've worked around bears a lot and also hunt around them. I carry a glock 20 (10mm) and I'm pretty confident it would stop a bear very effectively. I use 220gr hard cast ammunition.

This seems way more practical than a rifle for bear defense; its semi-auto, has 15rd capacity, never jams, is easily maneuverable and isn't much of a burden to have with you at all times. I suppose it might make sense to carry a rifle solely for protection if you aren't working or hunting., but if you are, it'll constantly get in your way.

I've never had to kill a bear, and I hope I don't unless I'm actively hunting them.

There's a limit where fluid velocity determines whether or not the fluid is compressible, but mechanically gases expanding via chemical reaction are similar to gases expanding from a compressed state. In other words, there are certainly airguns that shoot supersonic projectiles

I'm assuming OP isn't actually doing anything innawoods. However, a little advice; polar bears will actively hunt and eat people. While a handgun is fine for grizzlies, (anything bigger than 10mm or .357mag should be fine), I wouldn't go into polar bear territory without a rifle. And I wouldn't have anything chambered in less than 308. 45/70 would be another viable option. If you are actually serious about fucking around in polar bear country, I wouldn't go asking a bunch of degens on ns for advice.

Seriously, this is what I do. Heading out for opening weekend with my Glock 20 10mm and bear spray. Went out on a black bear hunt, still bought bear spray and the 10mm because the last thing I want to run into is a griz out in the wilderness.

Oh haha I didn't realize that comment was solely for OP. He's probably right, Dolan, bears don't go to nightclubs very often.

Yeah we need to have someone with bear behavioural training and a rifle in the group when we're working in polar bear country. Also keep the helicopter pretty much on standby so we can pull the guys out quickly if one is hanging around. I haven't encountered one on land yet, only seen them from a boat, and I'm okay with that.

If grizzlies and black bears are common we'll have spray and maybe a couple bear bangers. It's a totally different game.

What kind of work do you do? And where? Sounds like fun.

When I was doing forestry they would only ever have that kind of setup in Alaska if there were aggressive brown bears or wolves. In the PNW we always worked alone and saw black bears all the time. I think im the only one who even carried a gun in WA.

I have clocked by gamo magnum airgun In .22 at 1250 fps which is supersonic. (Speed of sound is 1125 fps). The .17 gamo magnum can reach 1600 fps with certain pellets.

theres nothing fundamentally different between gas expanding from high pressure and gas expanding due to a chemical reaction.

air under pressure can easily break the speed of sound. Its easier to achieve high speeds with a chemical explosion like in a normal sniper round but theres nothing to prevent an airgun from pushing air and a pellet faster than the speed of sound.

also its my understanding that most 9mm pistol rounds are subsonic, which shows that just because a cartridge is filled with gunpowder the muzzle velocity is not always supersonic

I work for the Coast Guard! Victoria is my homeport, so I'm mostly sailing up and down BC's coastline. That said, we have a handful of boats that head up north every summer, so I got to see most of the Northwest Passage while I was in training.

The polar bear risk comes when the guys are doing beacon maintenance on those northern trips. Or the occasional "mental health" walk ashore. That said, I'm a navigation officer, so mostly stay warm and dry on the ship's bridge. The exception being if we get a SAR/Environmental Response call, or if we're doing light station resupply with the workboat. In which case I'm out getting as cold and wet as the rest of the guys. It's a great gig, and the month-on month-off schedule made for lots of fun traveling pre-Covid.

Like a flare, but with a bang instead of a flash.Nice and small so I can keep them in my hip belt pocket. Also nice in that I don't have to be as close to the bear. Pretty good at spooking a bear, not always good at spooking the bear away from you. Not so nice in that there's a risk they'll start a forest fire. Also causes people to think a gun was shot, which isn't good when you're places that's not allowed. They've actually recently been banned in Vancouver due to an excess of fuckwits firing them off downtown.
