Why are people so ignorant about skis?

My friend who isn't the greatest skier just came into the shop I "work" at and asked me to mount up a pair of Liberty Genomes for him. In case you don't know, the Liberty Genome has a 141 underfoot. He said he wanted to use them as his only pair of skis for the year. I feel bad for laughing at him, but he pretends to do research about it, and then he just buys the first pair of cool top sheets he sees. He did the same thing for a bike last summer, and bought a 2017 Norco Aurum (a downhill bike) that he wanted to use for trail and town riding. And just a few weeks ago, he came into my shop and tried to convince me that Surface Outsiders are park skis.

Of course I mounted the skis for him, and of course I didn't charge him for it, but he should really put some effort into not wasting his money.

Thats still not that wide, people thought they were crazy wide at the time but now thats a pretty normal pow ski width. Theres a huge difference between 140 underfoot monsters and 125.

This.

When I made this thread I wasn't trying to alienate anyone who uses superfat skis. I personally used the 120 bentchetler as a (mostly) daily driver for a year, then I bought a moment deathwishes when someone stole my Chetlers.

Those skis were both perfectly fine for me, but the Genome for a mostly groomer ski is not going to be the most enjoyable thing.

wide boys for life. haters gonna hate. 141 is ungodly thicc but go off ig, I ride 121 surface balances for my dailies and they aren't too bad in the park. Although getting a downhill bike for trail and town is absolute stupidity, you only need a dh bike if you ride lifts and park only

I might turn my Majesty Lumberjacks into my daily drivers. 120 underfoot, and ski surprisingly well, very fun in the park. 141 tho.... widest I've skied are my Ghost Chants, I may have to mount those back up.

people are hopeless, I found out my friend was using 29.5 boots, he should have 27.5 he mixed up his boots at some point, and never noticed, I helped him adjust his bindings like 3-4 years ago? I didnt ask why he needed it. Ive been trying to improve his ski game, and he is sooo slow edge to edge, and cant do a nose butter for shit. No wonder, he had like a few inches of travel before boot did what he want, and on a nose butter he could almost slip out of the boot.



I helped him with new boots, and his ski skills hit a hard hard hard upcurve.



Same for a female friend, was teaching her nose butters and she goes "I think Im falling out" turns out she was in a wide big almost rental style 27.5 when she was a 26/26.5.

Bened_notnilWhile not the worst ski you could use in the park, you are just plain wrong if you think the Outsiders are a "park ski". Definitely a fun ski though, almost bought a pair a few weeks ago.

Not necessarily. just to clear this up, I wasn't saying the Outsider is the worst possible ski in the park, just that there are more ideal skis for the park.

If anyone thinks the Surface Outsider is the best possible park ski they clearly know nothing about skis.

If you're looking for a genuine answer and not just some validation that you are the archetypal skier who knows everything there is to know about gear: people are ignorant about skis probably because of the sheer amount of information out there regarding skis and the unwelcoming mentality of much of the ski community. Tbh I've struggled to ask for help getting gear out of fear of judgement and criticism. And this post just further validates many who don't feel welcomed or comfortable asking their "friends" for help. "I feel bad for laughing at him" .... that's the best you can do? In such an exclusive sport I'm sure that there is a better way to help out a friend who obviously doesn't know where to start...

I apologize if I come across as pretentious or full of myself (that's usually Dolans job around here lol).

I think you would really have to know the guy to understand what I mean about him. He does put effort into having knowledge about skis, he researches everything about gear and loves skiing and all that good stuff. And I have helped him with many ski-related purchases and given him endless advice about it. I think I offended you more with my reaction to him buying Genomes for his daily driver than I did him. I'm sorry you've been judged for needing gear advice, but that was not what this is about.

This is exactly what my buddy did with his opus and still rocks it as a daily/rock ski. The older model opus’ were one of the better choices for daily-ing a pow ski. I’ve tried it too and they work pretty damn good
e.litttYeah the skis were actually super playful, I got them used so they were a bit on the shorter side for my height imo (178cm skis and I'm 183cm tall) so that probably helped with things. The magnum opus's had a really nice rocker profile, so it was pretty easy to kick out and pivot when you wanted to do tighter turns in the trees and I felt like the edges held well on groomers. Also the ski was pretty light, like I learned how to do blind 270s off on them haha
