Replying to Editing shadows photo help

Yo so I'm working on this portrait for a project but am pretty inexperienced with editing - except habitually following an ambiguous routine of exposure up, fuck with highlites/shadows a bit, then contrast up

First one is original, I felt like the: rite corner of the room and the books are too shadowy, exposure may be kinda low, contrast could be bumped up, and saturation bumped down

Second one is how I tried editing, what ended up happing was: lowering shadows, bumped exposure and contrast up, raising blacks, and lowering whites and saturation

I know they both look kinda similar, but I think it's a little less green in the edit but the skin tone is ectoplasmic.
