How are the Shift series

Im an aggressive skier 150lbs 5' 11". Ski in pnw deep snow tons of park want to slap some shifts on a 110 daily driver wondering how they hold up over time. I guess looking for good first year impressions. Gonna do a bunch of touring and curious. Gonna be sick year have fun everyone!!

Have had them on my Kartel 108s for two seasons riding Whistler, Revy, etc., probably rode these like 40 days of those. You have to find the money spot with the AFD, but I haven’t had any issues apart from that, which was solved after a day or two.

The simple answer to this is... divisive. Some people love them and some people have all kinds of hell with them. I broke my Daymakers (and didn't have any spare parts, they are now back in working order) last spring, so I borrowed my friend's touring skis which were mounted with shifts, and skied for 15 days or so on them. I was very careful to keep them clear of snow but I had zero issues in that time. It was peak covid, so perhaps I was skiing more cautiously than normal, but I was still dropping pretty sizeable features and I came to trust the bindings pretty much as I do my regular ones.

That said, my girlfriend absolutely loathes hers and seems to get prereleases all the time. We've checked the setup a bunch of times and I'm confident it's correct, so hard to say. I have a set of my own coming this year (ideally two if I can source another) and I'll reserve my full judgement until I've skied those on hardpack more and in the park.

They're pretty magical as a one ski quiver binding. I'm not sure I'd take them into the park at a frequent basis though. A lot of the parts are plastic and the rails would probably slowly destroy the binding. Based on your description of yourself/what you like to do, have you considered CAST?

Had one very bad prerelease from a very gentle left turn. Then learned setup is key. AFD and forward pressure (I think) were both insufficient as when the bindings were mounted.

Just curious, did you mount these or were they shop-mounted?

Shop mounted. Had to bring them to another shop to check them and they found the problems with the afd and forward pressure.

absolutely love them and hate them at the same time.

Conceptually they are fucking sick. And if they work for you, then awesome.

However, most of the time Ive used them, they have been a royal pain in the dick, and I haaaate having just the one angle climbing bar.

I know three people that have had their toe pieces fall out of the mounting holes and one that constantly tightens his mount screws. I've never skied them but based on the amount of anecdotal evidence against them I would never advise someone to buy them. CAST is the way to go if you are looking for a bomb proof touring setup.

Why would this be a fault of the binding itself?

I'm aghast at the seeming inability of shops to mount/adjust the shift properly. I've had two sets mounted and forward pressure and AFD were way off on both sets.

Great for downhill when setup right, I actually hit tubes skiing to the base of Brighton from the side country with them, but shit for the uphill performance and durability wise, one heel riser that sucks, brakes opening up out of walk mode, snow getting stuck, and after like 30 days one toe wouldn’t lock in tour mode so they were deemed useless for touring. Still waiting on my warranty pair to sell.

I don't know why it is the fault of the binding, but it's four cases of the same problem. None of them went to the same shop.

It was a bit different maybe, but this spring I saw a chick go through a pond skim and her shift toe just shot out when she leaned back a bit, whereas the girl who hauled through it on some full on tech toes made it fine even with a suspect buck on one leg on the exit.

Love and hate relationship for me too. The adjustment is pretty finicky. Forward pressure needs to be adjusted a little tighter than the indicator says and for me charging and landing hard I have to readjust the AFD and tighten it a little bit every few days resort skiing. In the beginning I was getting a lot heal pre-releases landing big or switch but once I maxed out the DIN on the heal and gave a little more forward pressure they have been solid for me. If backcountry is your priority tho I really don’t think there is a better binding out there. If resort is your priority and you have a little extra money for something bomber I’ve heard good things about the CAST system and the Marker Duke PT.
