Wax for rails?

hey ns,
I'm making a backyard rail and I'm wondering if I should wax it with ski wax or if any wax works. I know some terrain parks use ski wax but does it really matter? The rail is metal btw not pvc

Ski wax would probably work fine but I think it's more expensive than other types. Skate wax might be a good idea. You also probably don't need wax so just try the rail first. I worked park crew last year and when rails got sticky we just sprayed some pam on them and that worked pretty well

I've never had to wax a rail before but the snowboard locs use cooking spray

Steel wool if it's rusty, then spray it with cooking spray. Some ski mtns use oil. I've heard skate wax gets hard in the cold making it too grippy.

Can vouch for pam cooking oil spray. That stuff greases up a rail like crazy

Waxing a metal rail has never made sense to me. It works on cubs for skateboards because concrete is porous so it fills all the tiny gaps and holes in the concrete. In summer when wax would be in, or close to a liquid state on the metal I could see it helping I guess.

Buff it to bare metal with a wire wheel and spray it with PAM or silicone spray if you want to make it really slick. 2 years ago I started spraying each rail we set with silicone spray after the first time it goes out for the season. They're slick as shit with one quick spray and I never have to do it again the whole season.

Find good all temperature wax. From what I heard you talk a blow torch and blow torch the rail and then put the wax on it so it melts into it almost you can always just spray them down with WD40 but if you got the money go for the blow torch and melt it on because you won’t have to do that often

Silicone spray works. But honestly pvc is really slick, especially when wet which it will be. If pvc isn't sliding well maybe check your edges. If theyre sharp theyll grip up.

Honestly if anything pvc slides scary fast a lot of times. It has a weird feel.

Shit I'm dumb and thought you said it was pvc not metal.

Get a cheap angle grinder if you dont have one. Wire brush it. If you really wang it smooth hit it with a flap disc after. Worth using the wire brush first to clear ant paint etc. Flap discs are expensive ish so worth getting the other shit off first.

Get a nice clean polish on it. Some people leave them bare, some people hit the top with spray because that comes off easy where your skis contact and the other stuff wont rust. But even the rust is mellow and you csn just wire brush it clean again.

Some huge mountains wax their rails especially tubes. Some of them swear by it, ive never done it though.

I honestly don’t have any expirence with waxing rails but If it’s sticky just hit it with more speed and it’ll probably fix most of your problems, but if you have limited space I can see why you’d want wax seems like most people use cooking spray or just get a barrel of lube
