Windells VS Mt. Hood ski camp

Was talking to a friend yesterday about how I was going to Windells last July but decided against it due to COVID.

He recommended Mt. Hood ski camp over Windells.

Assuming I go for the free ski program, what is taught? What level do you need to be at? How’s the vibe? How’s the dorm? What do you do after class?

How does Mt. hood ski camp compare to Windells?

What would you recommend?

Can't speak on mhssc but it's cheaper and seems chill. At windells they don't teach you shit (at least if you're older), you're pretty much paying 2000 dollars to ski on your own for 6 days and to share a bathroom with 15 dudes and no wifi with nothing to do off hill if you don't skate or tramp.

Im weird, I ride BMX versus skate. Every time I visit Portland I go to the Lumberyard indoor BMX park. Great place.

Tramp seems like it would be good for learning new tricks.

Thanks for the reply. Definitely will look into this more. Don’t want to waste $2500 with airfare on something.

You get assigned a coach with like 5 other kids, coach is usually a homie but they don't actually teach you anything, you just get there and they say "go ski" and everyone goes there own way. If you can track them down you might be able to get a tip or two but it's far from an organized program where the actually teach you technique and skills. They'd probably let you ride a bmx in the skatepark, but it's def heavy skater vibes

I'd bet the younger kids get more direct coaching. As far as I can tell the groups were based much more on age than on skill. I'd bet good money that adults get literally zero coaching, cheaper to buy a summer pass and live in the woods, and you can ski way more

Went to windells this summer I’m 15 and all the kids were younger and there was about 8 of us we had Reece rule and erectile Chris function as the coaches. Dude it was so dope basically half the kids just fucked around did nothing so I always had a coach with me. And I got taught so much shit we hit the tramps the airbag and everything on campus was worth it for me. But I have heard from friends your coach is kinda a hit or miss deal. But for me it was the funnest I’ve had all year.

Mhssc. Fun and creative setups. Run by nice people. They had a skate stop rail amongst other foolish pieces of metal lying around last year. Zeb Powell was there doing some crazy shit. Very laid back vibe though.

windells is an absolute horse shit company. i have never been more disrespected by my employers than i did while working for windells. that aside, mhssc is the greatest camp on hood. the parks are all the same now so mhssc has complete tow rope access. other than skiing we do great activities every day like cliff jumping, rafting, trips to hood river skatepark, paintball, trampoline and more. as far as the on hill experience we get to timberline an hour and a half before windells and high cascade does every morning. we start the day riding around the mountain, finding rock/chunder jibs and warming up the legs. by the time the park opens we’re the first ones in there and we’re already warmed up ready to ski. this summer the coaches were oscar weary, a40water and myself and i had a great time skiing w my campers. mhssc is the camp to save you money, and ensure that you have a great experience in and off hill. kids don’t come to mhssc to go to the mall, they come to ski!

I had a similar experience this summer. my coach was super cool and nobody bothered to use him to learn anything so i just got a free private clash for the week

Ig it depends on your age too. a lot of parents wouldn't be too down for their kid to sleep in the woods or a parking lot for a week at hood

Kinda one of those things you where what you put into it is what you’ll get out of it. I went to Windells with a list of things I wanted to work on and I spent most of my on snow time with a coach actually working on shit so I got a lot out of it.

the facilities at Windells were nice, I love skating so to have 2 huge ass parks right after I got off the hill was awesome- I actually got better at skating while I was there too which was cool. Other than that, the dry slope is mids, trampolines were crowded and chaotic so I stayed away from them the food was meh and the camp shop was TAXED. That said tho most kids thought they were way to cool for sponsored camp activities where they give away a ton of free shit so I won a lot of random shit like a pair of skis, countless hats, accessories, tee shirts, gift cards, posters and other shit. Windells also did a staff sale where all the pros/sponsored staff would sell their gear off for cheap (cash only so make sure you got some by the end of the week) and it was actually pretty clutch to get some new gear for the low.

But I wanna emphasize I went before “we are camp” took over and jacked the price up/changed the camps so I think my experience will be greatly different than others. The lane is shared by all the camps now so I’d say if you really want to go for skiing- go to MHSSC, if things like tramps, facilities and other shit is a huge deal for you go to Windells. MHSSC is more of a purist ski camp where Windells caters more to the “summer camp” vibe with other things to do.

I went to windells recently this summer and it was pretty amazing. i can't speak for mhssc but if you seek it out there is often at least some form of coaching you can get. It was the most coaching I have ever gotten skiing though, so I might be a little biased. Similar to the guy above me I also won a pair of skis, some hats, various other things etc. The dryslope rail setup is really fun and often you can get a coach to let you use it in the afternoon just with a couple friends. The food was dogshit though, I cant lie.

I went one summer and my coach was John ware and he’s the reason for 99% of the tricks in my bag and I was only there a week. Probably varies by coach but I also really wanted to get better so I was actively listening to his advice and even though I’m not pro now the fundamentals I learned in 7 days have carried thru for literally the past like 10 years
