Someone cut the cable on the Sea to Sky gondola again. Sounds like they have video footage of the person doing it this time..

BigPurpleSkiSuitI mean that would take some serious tools, truck, arent there cameras there?
SkiBum.Meh, small torch set that you could carry in a back pack would do the trick no problem. I’d highly advise not to do this as who knows what that cable will do once you start cutting. I would not want to be anywhere near that.

eheathhopefully they release the footage, i imagine some sort of chemical compound/explosive could burn through the metal maybe?
CatdickBojanglesI don’t think you’d need a torch just a grinder with a good cutting wheel.
SkiBum.Haha yeah, just a cordless cringed with few batteries could do it. Cable is around 2” or 2.5” I’d assume.
Again, fuck doing this under tension, gonna loose a limb
ConesForBreakfastWtf is wrong with people? Obviously the company will be able to come back from this, so it isn't an attempt to make them shut down. Are they making a statement? If so, they're yelling into the wind. I just don't understand the thought process here
_IRRELEVANT_I wonder if you were to stand up on the tower under the wheels you’d be protected at all when they snap from the tension?
CalumSKIThe guy after doing it the first time :

SkiBum.I heard of this technique being used way back when. It was a chemical of some sort. I don’t remember what but sounds like a crude old way to cut or burn metal.
Shit, enough batteries and blades in a Saws-all could even do it
VT_scratchThis is the second time it happened though... same thing a year ago. They had to close for 6 months and rumour is it was $14 million to get going again. Plus being shut down for a couple months with the pandemic, $$$ must be tough...
Trumpkin2020You could easily do it with some thermite. Easy to make. Light with a fuse. Burns very quickly but if you have a long enough magnesium ribbon or different fuse hot enough to ignite it and fast rope down, you could probably get out before the cable cuts your body in half.
But fucking seriously the balls on this person if they actually cut it versus remote severing it. Fuck. Clearly they've never seen ghost ship.
gravellmao what the fuck

theabortionatorI wonder if you're "safe" being directly at the point of the cut. Although nothing feels safe about holding an angle grinder spinning full speed as a highly tensioned cable snaps. Actually curious on what the person used. I wonder if they'd keep from releasing it to keep other people from doing the same. Idk, would be cool to find out.
I wonder how much you have to even cut through before it snaps from the pressure. One last strand, a little cut into that. Idk.
Would be pretty rowdy to witness. That said, I'll stay the fuck away from high tension cables. Even with winch cats you're not fucking with it while it's tensioned and most people are smart enough to stay the fuck away from them while they're hooked up.

CabbyArrantThermite would do it and its not exactly a tough compound too make.

1337Haven't heard yet, was there a particular reason the culprit did it? Mad about tourism? Some sort of protest? Seems like an odd act to commit twice without some sort of huge controversy.

TheWeazI want to know how they did it, theres some serious potential energy in that cable, and it would snap at some random point part way through and send the cables whipping around. Super dangerous.

T.L.You could do it one handed at the right spot on the tower.

The ends of the fray would tell you how it was done. A sawzall would be very jagged under a microscope. A porta bandsaw would be smoother horizontal lines. Faster too.
pinkcamo1000Idk man I've seen guys use those at work and they're still pretty damn slow compared to a cutoff saw
